Would this fit in a Golf or Focus

Need to move some big pieces of chipboard at the weekend and am hiring a car to do so. It will likely be a Golf or a Focus but I'm wondering how much it will be sticking out and if it will definitely fit width ways into the back of the car. The width is 1 meter and the length is 2.4m. With the seats down how much of the 2.4m will be sticking out ? Not sure weather to hire an estate instead, I don't mind it hanging out a wee bit but I don't want it hitting the road either

You'll need to ire a van I think... Or if you know someone with a trailer that would transport it for you :)

Do you reckon there is at least 1.4m between the back of the seats and the rear bumper ? If so would it sticking out 1m be dangerous ? I'll have it and the boot tied down and will also tie a hi-vis jacket to the end of it. I'd prefer not to get a van if I can avoid it as I'm using the car to get to a wedding too (not with the chipboard though;-)

Well I know that from experience it would be sticking about 2 feet out of the back of a Passat because I've transported 6 foot fence posts in one and they were toughing the backs of the front seats and just fit into the boot. Unfortunately I don't think that a Golf will be big enough... How much more is it to hire the estate.

You wouldn't pay much extra for a van, or possibly an Opel Insignia. Those are massive yokes.

Bad idea to drive a hatchback with the hatch tied down the exaust fumes come back in to the car , also you might scrape the hire car and have a big bill from them,

Hire a van. Speaking from experience, unless you are transporting small boxes / suitcases, there isn't that much room in the back of a hatchback even with seats folded. You're also likely to scratch and scrape the car interior getting it in and out.

I transported a few strips of wood in the 159 through the ski opening in the back seat; Don't remember if they were 2.1 or 2.4 meters long, but they essentially touched the windshield up front and almost the boot at the rear.

Seeing that your board is 1 metre wide, though, I'm afraid something like a Transit Connect might be just enough; shouldn't cost much more than the car to hire.

Thanks lads I might leave it for another time as I dont wanna be showing up at a wedding with a van. I've hired a Golf for 48 hrs and was hoping to kill two birds with the one stone, I drive a motorbike day to day so don't normally have a car which is why I wanted to get the chipboard moved after the wedding but before I leave the car back

Can you cut the timber down to smaller sizes for whatever job you want to do?

That, or hire a car with a roof rack would be the only way to use a car for this over long journeys
