Engine noise after stopping - EGR?

Just bought a 2012 Peugeot 308 Active 1.6 HDi. 18k miles on the clock.

I have noticed a funny noise when I stop the car. Doesn't always happen, usually only after a longer run (20 minutes or more). Can't be heard that clearly from inside the car but if you open the bonnet before you turn the ignition off it is very noticeable.

I have recorded a few samples...

This is the sound from inside the car, you can hear it from about 7 seconds...

This is the more noticeable version, I stopped and opened the bonnet, then recorded right above the engine after turning off.

I'm not sure where in the engine it is coming from, as I honestly don't have a clue under the bonnet.

I called back to the garage and they had a look, but as it doesn't always happen they struggled to identify it. I emailed the sound files and they came back to me to say that it is the EGR valve, but that it sounds a little louder than it should and if I wanted to come back in they would clean out the valve.

If it is the EGR, should I be insisting on a replacement rather than a clean? The car did come with a 1 year warranty, and in fact it probably still has some manufacturer's warranty as it is only 18 months old and I think Peugeot give 2 years warranty.

I've also been told that you can remove the EGR, would this be worth looking into or is it more hassle than it's worth?

    Thanks in advance everyone!

I assume you mean remove the EGR to clean it? The EGR valve is a crucial part of your car's emission control system. The EGR valve was an invention that made your car more efficiently burn its fuel. Your car will most certainly not run correctly if you remove completely and it will almost certainly void warranty.

A number of people have told me that you can remove the EGR in the same way as you can remove the DPF.

Edit - Google "EGR valve blanking"

PS, I'm not planning on doing this, it was just a side note for future reference. My reason for posting was to see if anyone recognises the noise!

What you have experienced is a regen of the emission system. You may not always hear it. The reason you do sometimes is because you shutdown your engine while it was in the process of an Active DPF Regen. No harm, it's completely normal. But again get the garage to look it over.

The dpf will only regenerate with the engine running.

It sounds to me like the egr valve is cleaning itself after the engine has been shut down and this is common on peugeots/citroens...weather it should be heard like this is another story so it would be better getting it checked out.

Get onto your local dealer, quote your vin number and ask if there are any recalls due on your car...Did you buy the car from a main dealer..?

Bought from a local Hyundai dealer. Comes with a years warranty so they have listened to the noise and suggested cleaning out the EGR. I'm just wondering if that would be sufficient or if I should insist on more.

You would'nt know if its enough until they clean the EGR as they said they would and carry out some tests on it. By the way is there dash lights coming/staying on that should'nt?
