who gave the word to gay people, it doesnt make any sense !

all humans on earth are homo SAPIENs, so why use a word like that in homosexual? when homo means human. yeah perfect sense, sexual human! seriously wtf

think its time for a new word, or at least use the current word, gay, more officially?

gay: attraction exclusively to person of same sex.

bi sexual: attraction to persons of both sexes.

wtf does homsexual mean? 'sexual person' um yeah, yes that makes it perfectly clear, most people that are not gay are 'sexual persons' !

Correct if I'm wrong but I thought it came from 'Homogeneous', hence the contrasting term heterosexual.

'Homo' comes from Ancient Greek meaning 'same' so it means a romantic attraction between those of the 'same sex'.

I'm fairly sure that's it, open to correction.

Homosexuality (from Ancient Greek ὁμός, meaning "same", and Latin sexus, meaning "sex")

Lots of language historians and zoologists on boards, apparently :)
Homo is the genus of different species of humans, including ourselves (Homo sapiens, Homo neanderthalensis, Homo erectus +loads more).
It does literally mean same as well though, leading to a lot of the confusion in here!

It means human or man in Latin.

Although, seeing as the Greeks invented gayness, it's only right that we go with their meaning.

"I never understood the hate on a n-word's preference

    Same sex everyday, monotonous"

Great lyric from Childish Gambino. Obviously censored as I kinda like not being banned.

It's a good point. If homosexuality is same sex then homophobia is the fear of things that are the same, then does that mean I'm homophobic because I'm terrified of twins?

You're not the first one to point that out according to wikipedia:

    • The etymology of homophobia citing the union of homos and phobos is the basis for LGBT historian Boswell's criticism of the term and for his suggestion in 1980 of the alternative homosexophobia.[103]

    Bart: Homer Sexual.
Moe: Wait one second. Let me check. Uh, Homer Sexual? Uh, come on. Come on. One of you guys has gotta be Homer Sexual.

There was a time when being gay meant you were happy. Language, just like humans, evolves.

    And queer meant strange.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

    Gay also mean happy OP.
And tbh I usually notice "gay" people to be happy... I believe it's because they can finally split the bill at dinner.
There are worse names to call homosexuals.

He's not even the first person to point it out in this tread!
And for the record I was going to go for the "homophobes are secretly gay" thing, hence the "same" as the people they fear.

What is the term for someone who is actuall afraid of homosexuals rather than discriminatory of them?

    "scaredypants"

The Viz Profanisaurus defines a homosexual as

    n. A man or woman who is attracted to members of his or her own gender. From the Greek homos = lifter, sexualos - togas.

    A moron...

I've come back to this post a few times and I'm still trying to figure out how you could be afraid of a gay person (unless you've been told strange stories about them). Like, imagine you have a best friend of a few years and they tell you they are gay, do you suddenly recoil in horror and discredit your years of close friendship? Utterly bizarre that this probably does happen.

I once knew an ageing homosexual that asked his doctor for viagra pills that were 1/8 as strong as the conventional ones. The doctor told him that this dose would not be strong enough for sex. The guy replied that he didn't need it for sex but just strong enough to stop him pissing on his loafers.

Like there aren't enough names already...

    Not at all...

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
