Question on new VW Passat audio install in Limerick

    Hi there,

Just back from a well known installer in Garryowen, Limerick where I dropped my Passat CC in to get a new audio / head unit installed. Unit is pretty tricked out, with touch screen, Bluetooth, GPS, etc.

Long and short of it is, IPod cable left hanging out by passenger footwell, GPS antenna left hanging by passenger side window, DTV antenna left on its side on passenger dash and rolling around with no reception. And to top it off, I now have an airbag fault (not there when I dropped it in). Oh and the only thing I asked to have done differently, which was connect the second USB port to the aux port in the left hand rest was not done, because it didn't seem to have the right cable
Friend of mine recommended him, no fault of his own, I hear all the taxi drivers go there and people speak well of him.

Can anyone recommend a good place to go that can get this done for me?
Gutted now, as I only bought the car two weeks ago from the UK and drove her back all happy. Now my baby's broke :(

I'd take it back and ask for it to be re-done. You can't have wires hanging out all over the place. There is no need for the GPS to be out for sure. I installed an RNS 510 in my last car (golf) and was able to use some double sided sticky tape to stick it up under the dash behind the air vents. Just seems like laziness to me. Sorry I can't help you with another suggestion of someone to sort it.

Bit of a joke that leaving stuff untidy and not working.
Make them get it right or money back.
I've seen on audis that If you disconnect the radio connector at the loom without disconnecting the Battery that it can put airbag light on. Should be a simple reset but they should be resetting it or paying for it if you don't know someone locally with vagcom or similar.

I'm going to consider my money gone, as I don't trust this guy to go near my car again.

Unfortunately it's a case of live and learn. I'll just have to find someone up to date on head units like the RNS 510 in Limerick, or bite the bullet and go to the main dealer for it :(

I had a similar experience with what sounds like the same premises in Garryowen in 2008.

I also had a VW -a brand new Jetta for which I had bought a Becker head unit.

When it was fitted the airbag light was on and they couldn't put it off. I finished up having to get it sorted at the main VW dealer. They said there were several wiring faults when they did the diagnostics test.

The VW dealer (not Hogan's) re-did the installation job for free as I had bought the car new from them but they said if there had been an electrical fire in my car, I was on my own re warranty etc..

Main dealer for me in the future especially for a new car installation. Lesson learned.

Thanks tippman, I think it's main dealer time alright. I was just in the car and with the ignition on but car not running, I'm hearing very low intermittent buzzing sounds from what I think may be the speakers.

God knows what's going on. I'll give local main dealer (not hogans!) a call tomorrow.

    Cheers.

If you paid someone to do a job go back and get him to do it properly. The same guy has been recommended multiple times on here, so I'm sure he will resolve your issues. Perhaps a junior employee did the job or something. Why pay to get the job done twice?

itsdacraic, I'll be going back - but I'm not letting him near the car again.
Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice shame on me.

Cables not run, airbag warning light on and buzzing / shorting sounds from car. That does not sound like a professional to me. I can't confirm if it was done by the same person, but there did not seem to be any other employees in the garage.

is main deal (not hogans) a better prices than hogans? thinking of getting timing belt and servicing done on 8 year old jetta - also high brake light needs replacing - pity Elm is gone as they were great to deal with

Pop down to us in the Dock Rd. (Castle Park - where the UK cars are) and we should be able to diagnose/turn off the airbag light for you. Can give you a hand with basic power/wiring and sound. Ger Carcom might be able help you out too.

I dont think main dealer will do anything with after market stuff fitted only tell you put original back in. Buzzing in normally caused by stuff not grounded properly.

Think you should disown your friend !!!

Hope you have sorted car out now.

    Thanks irelandJoe!

Car sorted now, went to a German car specialist in Castlemungret business park off the end of the dock road opposite the cement factory. Great guys, very professional and handle all electronics and mechanical work on German cars.

He fixed the mess the original guy made and made a lovely job of the aftermarket head unit. Couldn't recommend them enough. Gonna use em for everything from now on.

Was told that not only did he do previous damage to car, but also _cut_ the parrot hands free kit wiring from the car instead of removing it, rendering the parrot microphone useless. Feckin thing could get me 60 quid selling it on. Will be calling to Garryowen later in the week to get a parrot microphone from him, for free. Or go to small claims court.

    Lessons learned!

ma11achy, glad to hear you got your Passat sorted. As I posted earlier, I learned a lesson the same way a few years back with my Jetta.

Could you pm me the details of the guy in Castlemungret business park in case I ever decide to upgrade my car stereo?

    Thanks!

Would have been wiser to call there first and explain that you were unhappy and why. Now you've let someone else go at the car in the intervening time and it will be much harder for you to get any sort of compensation from him.

    I agree with @Itsdacriac

As much as I would have hated bringing the car back to the original place I would have at least demanded my money back from him first before getting it sorted.

I assume you paid for the work with a Card and got a receipt for the work ?
