Audi A4 Cabrio Headlight Alignment Issue

As in the title, the car is an '04 A4 Cabrio and it went through the NCT last week and passed fine except for the o/s headlamp alignment. It has been taken to a garage and after half an hour of trying (even changing fuses somehow??) he couldn't adjust it properly and stated a new lamp unit is probably required.

Has anyone ever come across an issue such as this?

Does the car have self levelling Xenon lights?
Im assuming one of the levelling motors has failed and that is the reason for the messing with fuses etc.
I would assume though that the motor adjuster can be manually moved to the zero position and then the light unit itself adjusted in the old fashioned way.

    No, standard halogens.

It's a strange one and if I can avoid paying out for a new lamp unit I'd be glad.

Well even with standard halogen lights, you must have the beam adjuster dial. Much of my first post still holds true. Fair enough if you want the electrical adjustment working, parts might be required but just to get through the nct, it should be very possible to get the beam aligned manually.
