In our club the categories for prizes are cat 1 0-12 cat 2 13-18 cat 3 19-28.Just wondering how does this differ from other clubs..A big percentage of cat 1 is won by 11-12 handicaps and theres been a lot of complaints from single figure golfers over this a lot reckon that 12 handicappers should be in Cat 2..In strokeplay we have lowest gross the problem seems to be with stableford competitions .Jusr wondering has this been a problem at any other club and how was it sorted ..in cat 1 out lowest handicap would be 4

Are these categories prizes in addition to overall prizes?, if so they seem about right to me depending on numbers in each category, what you could do is see the actually numbers of players in those categorys over the last 10 or so comps and adjust the the bands in each category if necessary, but I think ye probably should have a best gross prize regardless, best gross should always be recognised.

Yea we do an overall aswell..In the last 30 comps 39% of the winners were 11-12 handicaps, our problem is if ye take 11-12 handicaps out of cat 1 it leaves a smaller number compared to the other cats . .Would any clubs do best gross in stableford competitions ?

Typically categories are worked out by the numbers at each level, otherwise the distribution of the prizes is off.

There would always be a gross for stableford I'd say

Always on our stableford comps, usually won with 30-32 points from a low hcp player

What Greebo said and as long as that is the case then I don't see how it can be done in any fairer way.

Cat 1 in our club is up to 13 so the winner of the category mostly comes from the 10-13 range. Categories 2 and 3 generally have a better distribution but it's very hard for a 5 handicapper to give 8 shots to a steady 13 handicapper. It happens - but not very often. I think clubs would be better off sticking to the 4 GUI categories and splitting the prize fund based on entry numbers to each category.

I think also Scratch Cups are a prime example of the opposite scenario. The intermediate in our place is from 12-18 and lo and behold the Gross was won last year by a 12 handicapper. In a Gross comp the 12 man is effectively getting 6 shots from the 18 man based on ability so it stands to reason that it will be won by someone between 12-14.

Have you had a look at the distribution of HC's within the Cat 1 range in your club?

I wouldn't be surprised to see somthing like this:
    0-5 HC 10%
    6-9 HC 25%
    10-13 HC 65%

Sometimes a certain HC range always seem to be winning because that certain HC range should be winning when you look at the distribution.

I've done it previously with a club, looked at all members HC's, grouped them and the then looked at the winners over the year. The correlation between the % of winners and % of golfers in that range was strong.

The Cat 2 & 3 seem to be better distributed... I would say the HCs are more even distributed at in those Categories.

It varies depending on entries but we usually do it as ::

    Cat A : 0 - 9 or 0 - 11
    Cat B : 10 - 15 or 12 - 17
    Cat C : 16+ or 18+

Category prizes in Royal Curragh kick in after 4th prize. One prize in each category as follows

    Category 1 + to 9
    Category 2 10 to 13
    Category 3 14 +
