Hi there, just wondering if someone can give me some advise on this. The sky box that I have is fairly outdated (very little memory, can stop in the middle of recording a program), I rang Sky yesterday asking if I could upgrade just the box to the sky+ hd box, the person I was speaking to was looking for €270 just to change the box. No way will I be paying this. I have seen boxes for sale on different sites for around €50, does anyone know if the procedure for swapping boxes is straight forward or would I need to get the card upgraded?

No problem with getting your own box. Lots of them for sale on Adverts and the likes. Just make sure you are buying from a reputable source as Sky will block it if it had previously been used by someone who defaulted on their payments or the likes.

After you get the box and get it connect and insert your card you just ring Sky and they will pair the card with your new box. You should have a signal within a minute or two.

If it's memory then you can do fresh install from the installer menu, it'll wipe everything but a new box will effectively do the same.

Alternatively you could just cancel and say you are going down the Free To Air route. Some people frown on this but I don't see an issue, you are paying good money for the service so you should be able to use it properly. Most likely they will give you the updated box to stay, if they don't and call your bluff then you can just say you changed your mind and hang up and look into the 'cheap' HD boxes although as Muffler points out you need to be careful, I've read a number of posts on here saying that SKY wouldn't pair the card for the reason noted, also be wary of fried boxes i.e. where the HDD is on the way out, it may not be immediately apparent but you may find in a week or two that it starts giving recording faults before crapping out completely.

Alternatively just buy a combo FTA box and see how life with the cord cut suits you.
