Blood pressure - reading after exercise

    Hi all,

I'm looking for a steer on or link to what is considered to be a normal or abnormal blood pressure reading immediately after exercise.

I've been on BP medication for 20 years and pro-actively manage my hypertension i.e. no added salt on any food (except chips from the chipper the very odd time as a treat!!), much reduced alcohol intake (keeping it to the 20 units per week limit) and I do a bit of jogging in the form of two or three 10k fun runs per annum which helps motivate me to get out and train 3-4 times a week.

As a result my BP is pretty well under control (averaging 139 over 85 with a resting heart rate of 61) which I don't think is too bad given I am 45 years old.

After a 40 minute 6.5km run this morning I decided to immediately take my BP reading and it was 179/72 with a heart rate of 111 which didn't really surprise me as I was knackered. 40 minutes later I took my BP reading again and it was 124/67 with a heart rate of 80.

I'm not concerned about the readings and I'm not looking for medical advice but I would like to find out if the sort of reading I got after exercise is "normal" or within normal thresholds. I can easily find information which interprets BP readings taken at rest like this http://www.bloodpressureuk.org/BloodPressureandyou/Thebasics/Bloodpressurechart but I can't find anything which helps interpret BP readings taken immediately after exercise. I tried sports BP readings etc but can't find anything. Maybe it's just pointless taking BP readings immediately after exercise as the results are meaningless??

    Ben

What you are asking for is medical advice and you really need to discuss this with your doctor.
