hi guys, has anybody on here ever tried to refurbish a gearbox on the old type avensis 98-03 ?? Ive a 00 avensis with the 4afe type engine and ive a lot of noise coming from the gearbox..i will shortly have another gearbox out of a similiar car unfortunately the bearings are noising in this one also..i have been on the phone to toyota main dealer and they tell me its two particulare bearings that wear out on these gearboxes and i can get them for 100 euro..so im thinking about splitting the donor box and replacing the bearings..not a lot of practical info on the net about this job so any advice appreciated..If i can replace the bearings myself i can get the box fitted for 150 euro so all in all id be saving myself 200 euro which is money thats needed elsewhere..im not a mechanic but im handy and have been servicing cars for years so have an inkling if you know what i mean

I've never heard that the gearbox bearings were too much of an issue on the 97-03 avensis so it might be possible to get gearbox from a breakers that you could install yourself. The 03-09 boxes do give a lot of trouble at about 150K miles.

There was a guy on donedeal advertising gearboxes that are refurbished for about the €300 mark.

I say all this because I don't think this job is within the ability of a diyer. Some specialist tools are required for the 03+ box anyway and I presume for the 97-03.

Will be interested to see how you get on with this.

Id strongly advise you not to take on this job yourself if your not a competent mechanic as replacing the bearings is Imo beyond even the best diy'er.

It's no where near as easy as it sounds.

I saw one that had locked up in third, it would occasionally catch and was pretty bad. The gearbox from the Carina E 1.6 is a direct fit much easier to swap boxes than try and set clearances between teeth and lash etc.
    I wouldn't do it.
There must be some scrapped CarinaE or Avensii available? Surely you'd buy one for 100-150?
