Motor tax arrears penilty

I bought a 131 car in December and it was never taxed before so after buying I got no paperwork 2 tax it. I only got the rf100 today and now I'm liable to pay 285 in arrears and the yearly fax is only 190 so the total is 475.

I know I need to pay tax from December but this is ridiculous. Is there a way to sort this?

You bought the car in December, are you driving it since December?
If you have been I fail to see the issue.

The car was registered in January 2013 demo car till I bought it now they want It back taxed to when it was registered. I've no problem paying the tax from December but not before that. Also waiting 4 months for paper work is ridiculous

You are only liable for motor tax from the beginning of the month that ownership transfers to you. It sounds like you are getting stung for arrears from before you became owner. On the log book (licensing cert) what date is the transfer of ownership? Was it a private sale or did you buy from a garage? If from a garage then they should be able to supply you with evidence that you only bought it in December.

Who's name is on the registration cert? Is there a registration cert?
Car should be in your name.
I would imagine the car was taxed when it was registered first. Is it 'zero mileage'?

Sounds like it was never taxed. The arrears before you own it are not your liability (or anyones as it happens.) As said you are only liable from the first of the month in which you bought it.

I can't imagine it was never ever taxed though.

Usually with demos/pre regs they'd have to tax them to get the logbook, which would be held by the distributor for a certain time. Given that its a 131, its a bit odd that it was only sold in December.

Its unlikely that the OP would be the first registered owner of the car (which AFAIK would be the case if it was never taxed)

I don't have a log book or tax book or whatever they call it yet. Only thing I have is the rf100. The car was registered in January 2013 and never taxed.

Just for the benefit of anyone following the thread, the reg the OP provided is showing as 2 owners, with the change of ownership processed a few days ago but dated as January.

Vehicle reg cert should be in the post.

Try doing a motortax.ie PIN retrieval for the laugh.

so i went to the motor tax office today and because we are only just in to April the girl behind the counter was able to do the tax from the 1st of march and only caught for penalties for January and February.

also she said the on-line system isn't set up for change of ownership so that's why it wanted arrears from January 2013.

total cost was €228 which is a lot better that €475 online
