Just read a report saying a Jet Blue flight returned to the airport in Jamaica.
The reason listed is that the Capatain saw something 'untoward' in the cockpit.

Is that usual parlance for a pilot returning a flight?

I thought it was curious. Just wondered what you professionals thought

A Jet Blue Flight out of Kingston, Jamaica Monday evening was forced to return to the Norman Manley International Airport for an emergency landing after the pilot reportedly "saw something untoward" in the cockpit. Details surround the incident are unclear at this time but emergency crew are said to be at the airport carrying out respective duties. According to reports reaching OBSERVER ONLINE the plane returned to the NMIA approximately 15 minutes after take-off.

The mind boggles? An entity in the cockpit, a ghost, an alien? 'Something untoward'? The FO's aftershave? A snake, a box of snakes? Maybe the pilots had an uneasy feeling they were being watched or one felt the other was acting strangely and talking about MH370 all the time!

Or maybe more prosaically maybe there was a smell of smoke in the cockpit or a warning light. I remember an aircraft in the company I worked for at one stage returned with a smell of smoke on the flight deck. When it landed I bounded up the steps after the fire crew. But the smell was gone and the crew looked sheepish. But you can't take chances in that situation.

The crew would never say 'something untoward'. Probably a journalistic expression.
