Clutch Wear question

My brother in law has a 2001 Honda Accord 1.8 with about 120k miles.
Car is in good nick cosmetically and looked after reasonably well. He was told he needed a new clutch at a cost of 1000 euro by a garage recently. I drove it last night and the biting point of the clutch is fairly high, just before the pedal is let back out fully. I did a few of the clutch wear tests that I am aware of

I let out the clutch pedal slowly in 2nd gear and the car cut out.
I let out the clutch pedal slowly in 3rd and the car cut out.
Floored the accelerator and the car took off in accordance (bad pun) with the revs. No lag or delay.
Drove along in 3rd and dropped into 2nd and the revs flew up.

All these things mean (I think) that the clutch isn't in terribly bad shape.

The fluid in the reservoir is very black/contaminated looking. Would poor fluid or air in the hydraulic system contribute to the biting point being so high or is there any other reason for it?

    I'd appreciate any advice.

    Thanks

    Mark

id def do a fluid change if the reservoir is contaminated and make sure to get all air out after replacing , clutch sounds ok its not even slipping from what you've described . 1k for a clutch + labour ... id tell them to **** off

1k seems like a bit of a joke alright. I'll flush the system next weekend. I don't have the Haynes manual for his car but I presume the brake and clutch reservoir are the same. If I flush all the brake calipers to clear out the whole system and then bleed the clutch slave cylinder should that do the trick?

You can adjust clutch pedal free play at well that will change the bite point of the clutch pedal.
