Help me pick Mammy out a new car

    Howdy folks,

My mother is in the market for a new (to her) car. She has been driving family sized cars all her life but no need for that size anymore. It'll be mostly for herself, dog and the occasional grandchild or two. Also, a decent sized boot would be nice. Not talking Octavia size but something she can throw a few bags of groceries, a bit of luggage and other small bits and pieces for when she heads down to the mobile home during the summer.

Now this is where she starts getting picky so here goes,

    €12k budget

    5 doors

    Petrol or Diesel (preferably petrol)

    Low to average mileage

    Lowest tax bracket possible

    1.3 max (hence low tax)

A little bit of poke (basically not a slug)

    Air-con

    Electric windows/mirrors

    Warranty

    And the obvious... reliability.

She also wants a car that isin't too low to the ground. Her back isin't great so needs it to be higher than your average car. The Suzuki Liana she currently drives is the perfect height if thats anything to go by. She struggles to get in and out of my S60, my brothers Accord and my sisters Corolla.

This is what we have narrowed our hunt down too:

    Honda Jazz

    Skoda Fabia

    Opel Corsa

    Toyota Yaris

    Mazda 2

Sooooo, she's not making this easy so thats why I've turned to my fellow boardsies for assistance. What do ye think of her choices? Any help appreciated lads.

The jazz is the best packaged IMO and will have the best driving position.

I think the Jazz is number 1 with her anyway but she's keeping her options open.

Just showed her the two you posted. The Venga is one I never thought of so thats something to look at.

She said she didn't want a bread van when I showed her the Soul! :pac:

She went off the idea of a KIA though (my bad). I told her that the dealer in Limerick city don't service them and she doesn't fancy taking trips to Garryspillane.

The ix20 is actually a nice find. Never thought of that either. She seems to like it too. She has a list of cars to look at on Wednesday (all dealers) so maybe there'll be one in Limerick for her to test drive.

Not everybody's cup of tea but a very suitable car for older folk who like a bit of practicality but don't do the mileage to warrant a diesel ix20.
I know of a few pensioners driving ix20s now who have no need for diesels at all.

Are you looking for a new new car, or just a new to her car?

Would you consider a Ford Fiesta? Not sure if it'd come within your budget new, but I'm sure there's plenty out there nearly-new. Our mother got one a few years back, it's a lovely light drive, plenty of poke, reasonably high driving position, can't remember what engine but I think 1.2, nice and smooth drive and you'd steer it with your little finger (our/her priority at the time in choosing).

Please don't shoot me if that's not a trendy option, but it worked for us!

Fortunately the 1.6 crdi is a great engine and the DPFs in them seem to nit give bother.

The 1.33 in the verso-s is a lovely engine and the 6 speed is quite good too.

New to her. She's aiming for 11 upwards. I had a fiesta as a rental for a few days and was happy with it. Found it nice and roomy and comfortable. My aunt has one but my mother never took a liking too it. She has no interest in one despite my best efforts. I will try get her to test drive one though.

Told ye she was picky :o

Thanks for all your help lads. My mother, as lovely as she is, is known to change her mind at the drop of a hat. She abandoned a few of her ideas when searching for a new wagon. After test driving eight cars, she seems too have found the right one and she's happy out with it.

    I give you:

Despite her original objection, she only went and bought herself a fiesta!

I might add that she got a fantastic deal and is a cracking little car for her needs. Got a nice bit off the asking price plus a few other things to sweeten the deal.

I had a feeling that she would only settle with something that she was comfortable in and would go easy on her back. Irish mammies eh?

    Thanks again lads :)

For 12k you'll get a new car whose tax is based on emissions so engine size isn't relevant. A 2litre could be cheaper tax than a 1.3
