Seems a bit like my own situation, I have two odd wheels but as you might have seen I need a new rear mech before anything else is changed. Will be watching this with interest though :)

The best money I ever spent on cycling was a set of hand built wheels built by Staggs in Lucan. Mavic Open Pro rims on Shimano Ultegra hubs. They are 36 spoke because I'm a big lad but they have been bulletproof.
The stock wheels I got on my bike were useless. They kept breaking or loosening spokes. Then I pulled the nipples through the rim grinding up a steep hill.
I will never buy factory wheels again.

I've had a similar experience with Mavic Open Pro rims and Hope Evo hubs built by Expert Cycles in Rathfarnham - brilliant winter and training wheel! Totally serviceable and reliable!

Shimano wheels have been recommended to me, having said that I'm not a competitive cyclist and I don't have a lot of money to spend on wheels anyway so it was probably an appropriate suggestion?

if you are looking to just keep the bike on the road go to merlincycles.com

    cheaper wheels there.

if you are going to buy a bike in the summer then don't be so quick to buy cheap wheels.

buy a new bike and wheels will be the first thing you will replace.

everyone says this is a good deal -irish gang

The Mavic Aksiums that are €252 in Chainreaction are €139 on 4thebike.de. Bought them for my winter bike. A steal at that price. Mavic tyres included.

That's some difference. Looking at them there now. Not great at the old German tho!! Are they a good wheel? They will be going on what will be my winter bike next year:).
Merlin cycles is cheaper than chain reaction for the shimanos.

The Aksiums are the entry level Mavic Wheelset. Dont be put off on the low price. They are very lively wheels. The tyres are great too. Perfect wheelset for sportives etc. You wont go wrong with them. Delivery from Germany is about 5 days with DPD.

The free mavic tyres are awful, My set are a horror in the wet, I replaced them with GP4000's.
Its still a fantastic deal though.

I have aksiums on my winter allot bike and Quattro's on my carbon bike. I've Michelin Pro4SC's on the quattro's and Luganos on the aksiums so it's difficult to say which is better. The aksiums are a fantastic wheel, they roll very well but the free wheel is noisy as hell compared to the fulcrums which are virtually silent. The fulcrums spin freer than the aksiums but it's not a huge difference. The aksiums are marginally lighter than the quattro's but the quattro's 'feel' lighter and accelerate quicker on the bike.

I think both are very good wheels and I've no plans to change either anytime soon.

Is it worth paying extra €100 or just the aksiums?

I have a voucher so would need to add very little to aksiums or 3x more to quattros.

I bought a set of DT Swiss spline 24 off Bike-Discount.de to replace a set of shimano R 500 there is a big difference no rubbing on the brakes when you put the power down on the pedals. I decided on them as they have a24\28 spoke count which suit my weight better.

Am looking at these, they look like they are solid, high spoke count and good hubs and rims.

    Shimano-Mavic Wheel Set Ultegra 6800 - CXP 33
    http://www.bike24.de/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;menu=1000%2C4%2C123%2C30;product=61661;mid=78;pgc=0;page=1;lang=2

Any opinions, they seem pretty heavy though but at close to 90kg I am not sure if I'd get away with more pricier / lower spoke count wheels on Irish roads?

Hi I run the 6700 version of these. I'm also around 90kg and wanted reliable wheels coz I commute a lot on the road bike dublin to Maynooth.
They aren't exactly krysiums but I've found them sturdy and they do me for all purposes. Can't really fault them. Maybe I'm reading that campy zondas might have been a better option but there's something to be said for a hand built wheel
