Cracked Screen on Laptop not monitoring to external monitor

My toshiba laptop screen is broken on the lcd side, as there is no visible evidence of screen damage while at the same time it looks smashed. The laptop wont connect to an external monitor which indicates that there must be some other damage.

The warranty is up. There is no house insurance or car insurance etc. I just want technical answers if this is possible. Thanks

Tried the appropriate Fn/Fsomething key combo to toggle displays?

If it's Windows 7 or 8, try holding the Windows logo key and P, after that press the right arrow and then Enter. Should achieve the same result.

While very difficult to give a definitive answer without seeing anything, here are my thoughts. If you are not getting a picture to either the screen or an external monitor it sounds like a graphic chip problem. In laptops this is generally an integral part of the motherboard, therefore I would guess you have likey lost the motherboard too. To see if this is the case, you need to strip the laptop down to the bare bones, looking for signs of scorching or charring (carbonising) on the motherboard and around chips.

If you have access to another computer you'll find instructions on how to strip it. This is a fiddly job, best done by someone with a steady hand and if possible practice.

If the MB is gone, you may well find a replacement on EBay or in one of the parts shops you see opening all over the place.

Thanks for the advice, but the screen does not display anything recognizable other than a kind of broken grey kind of colored screen like the attached image. It powers off itself after about a minute.

As for motherboard damage, it was physical damage and not overheating, a pull on the plugged in power adaptor that did it.

Sounds more serious than a broken screen so.

That is exactly how the initial damage could have been caused by the cable pull, the soldering etc. on the MB could have been damaged. Opening it is the only way to be sure.

    Update on my screen.

Went to a shop and was informed that it needed a new mother board, and new screen. I went and ordered the new screen myself and installed it. When I switched on the laptop, it worked perfectly so i have saved a few hundred quid in the process.
