Maxol Fuel

I do about 1300km per week in my 1.8 TDCI Mondeo. I started keeping an accurate measure of actual fuel economy on each fill up (not the car display) a few months and I seem to be getting about 3 to 4 mpg more with Maxol diesel. The driving is 95% motorway. Topaz is way down, 43 mpg on one occasion, where as applegreen, esso are all about 48 mpg. The Topaz station is always the same one on the N11! l I get about 51.5 on Maxol which seems to be very consistent.

I was of the understanding that all the diesel came from the same tanks? It doesn't seem to make much sense.

I thought so to but I carried out the very same experiment as you and Maxol was by far the best allthough Topaz was not far behind with Applegreen at the bottom.

I'm getting better MPG from my local Top station than from local Topaz.
So there are differences out there.

Best MPG I ever got was after I filled up in Germany.

Usually on a full tank I get roughly about 615km from Maxol but with Apple Green it's usually more like 575km, so obviously I go with Maxol were possible

There was a thread on this years ago. Apparently the fuel is basically the same when it comes out of the refinery but different brands then add their own additives at their depots before distribution.

I dont know about fuel mileage, and this might just be in my head, but my car feels better when running on Maxol than it does on other brands.

According to the delivery drivers I work with, the fuel comes from the same depot but different brands additives are added at the point of fill AFAIK.

I'm happy enough on Maxol fuels.

I don't fill at Topaz anymore, I get way less miles to the tank. and I have been tracking every drop of fuel I've purchased since 2008. An I fill all the way up every time.

The other ones are about the same but Topaz always way down.

Best economy I ever got was Shell premium (v-max or something it was called) in Italy.

I don't use anything else other than maxol, my car performs better and the mpg is Always better :)

Always Maxol for myself as well. Car runs smoother on it and the MPG figures (ha!) are also better with it.

Interesting thread .Ironic that Topaz boast in ads of getting MORE MPG while Maxol claim their fuel is 'traceable to source' .Certainly Maxol , Leixlip have OUTSTANDING customer sevice .All the staff sooooo friendly and professional.

    Maxol all the way.

A cynical person might suspect that Maxol PR department are undertaking a boards.ie blitz tonight.

I'm only joking of course. What I would like to know is how would one determine what oil company they are buying from. My local station is branded Mace. No oil company logos anywhere.

Maxols are typically partnered with Mace's so could be one.

Thanks for that. I am getting a Diesel car next week so this is a handy thread.

IMHO if the site has no reputable oil company branding you'd be best served to steer clear

It is not worth the risk with the huge amount of washed fuel going thru independent stations

Whatever it is with Topaz, the Mondeo doesn't like it at all. The couple of times I've filled there it was way down in mpg.

Are maxol or indeed all petrol stations selling E5 still? I remember a thread from awhile back saying it was being discontinued but still see the stickers on the pumps passing my local maxol

BP, Texaco, Esso or Maxol for us. We fill up at the same stations.

Everything else is so-soish. To me Topaz is bloody expensive and not all that good, Top ain't great, Crapplegreen is just turnip juice and let's not mention unbranded stations.

There's some I've missed such as Emo and Gulf but I haven't had a chance to try those on a regular basis.

I'm a bulk buyer so can't comment on pump prices but for price per kilometre for me Topaz can't be beaten.

Applegreen, gives me noticeably less mpg, I only go to them when I have no other option.
I never go to non branded stations.
My engine has near 200K miles on the clock and is still running like a dream and I'd like to keep it that way :)

Maxol's web page seems to indicate that the legal minimum bio-fuel percentage is now 6.383% which might explain why E5 is no longer marketed. E6.383 doesn't have the same ring about it :)
    See http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/Energy/Sustainable+and+Renewable+Energy+Division/Biofuels/
Following consultation with stakeholders, pursuant to Section 44D of the National Oil Reserves Agency (as amended), the Minister has signed the National Oil Reserves Agency Act 2007 (Biofuel Obligation Rate) Order 2012 to increase the rate of biofuel obligation from 4% by volume to 6% by volume (or 6.383 per cent by reference to petroleum products) from 1 January 2013.

Any idea what that should that put the octane rating at now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 592 ✭✭✭JC01

Always use Maxol myself, the car feels way better on it and lasts noticably longer. I wouldn't go near topaz, Tesco, applegreen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 eddiemunk

I don't go to applegreen heard horror stories about pump damage same for Tesco fuel. I look out for maxol where possible too or Texaco people are kidding themselves by going for cheapest fuel stations often with no branding and trucks delivering it have none either ...whys that.

Although I agree with the nastiness regarded with non branded stations, its not like there are some lads sucking the fuel from the ground in the arsehole of leitrim somewhere.

Most of the fuel hitting ireland is coming from one source supplier, two if you want to get technical. The difference in fuel is nothing more than a placebo effect or at worst a variation in pumps.

Although I dont buy "cheap fuel", you'll notice that how they sell so cheaply is due to the mark up in prices in the shop (cans of coke etc).Topaz however are just robbing bastards for everything.

Funny how topaz claim to get 25km per tank extra with their "clean fuel". False advertising if I ever saw it.

Applegreen and top are worst ever for fuel economy. Top garage near me is always 3 cent a litre cheaper than anywhere else but always get significantly less MPG so not worth it in the long run.

Maxol for me as well :-)

    Hi Eddie

It's extremely common for unbranded trucks to deliver to reputable branded stations

A lot of us use logistics companies like Portway (Maxol applegreen etc) who deliver in unbranded trucks

Maxol is best for my petrol BMW too.

i stopped buying maxol since they started selling only that E5 ****e a few yrs ago... big drop in mpg for my petrol car on that stuff.

i switched to esso and seem to get an extra 5% mileage per tank fairly consistently compared to some other brand stations (although not tried maxol in 2 years, ever since the E5 fiasco).
