Why is TG4 HD a trial, why was it a trial to begin with? Are their technical problems with TG4 HD? Why launch a trial?

Sorry I do apologise, either would do? I mean trial as in test.

I would just like to beg the forgiveness of those without Dyslexia for my error and I hope that by posting in this thread that they might forgive my bad spelling and grammar, its just that I had to let go of my editor due to financial difficulties, he refused to pay me!

Not sure but I remember when RTÉ did its first live HD broadcast on RTÉ2 HD back in May 2010 (Magners League Final) I saw an Observe HD truck in the city at that time.

All the cameras that are set up in Thomand Park are Hd cameras most are Sony made ones from what I see, I steward there so I'm rite up close to most of them all the time.

On a related matter I have been tracking the satellites being used for GAA via the uplinks and identified who the OB operators are. Not all of them use HD. You can work out some of who the operators by their sat up link.

    http://www.satelliweb.com/index.php?section=search

    Stick GAA in the top.

ah so if UTV chip in they might go on saorview in HD next year but if not they cant afford the 2rn tariff on their own. Kinda supports TV3's case that 2rn are charging too much. I know that the tariff was set to take account of transmission costs etc but its not looking good for any further HD channels on saorview in the near future?

Doesn't really since they state that there isn't enough room on Mux 1.

It fails to explain why a trial was necessary

How much would it cost TG4 to go HD on Saorview now versus the amount they pay for SD? 200,000? They got 2.7m for HD from the Dept.

    SD tariff - €963,278
    HD tariff - €2,152,359

It costs about double plus a bit for HD. But the pricing model decided upon causes the actual costs to be divided up according to actual bandwidth used.

This is daft pricing for DTT. A mux is a fixed cost. If 2rn stuff zeros into the mux instead of programme, the cost is the same for 2rn, but higher for all the other broadcasters as the zeros do not attract a charge, but actual costs are recovered. If one broadcasters uses more bits it costs them more, but then the costs for the other broacaster goes down. This is because we have too much capacity on two muxes, unless more stations go HD.

Currently RTE have 2 HD channels and 2 SD channels and 10 (or is it 9) radio channels. TV3 have 2 SD channels and TG4 have one SD channel. If an HD channel equals 3 SD channels, RTE have to pay for 8 SD channels and 10 radio channels, which just about equals one mux. So why not give them mux 1 and use the other for TV3 and TG4 (and UTV if it joins DTT). If UTV goes HD and TG4 goes HD, then there will be little room left for TV3 to go HD unless they drop 3e.

A model should have been derived that encouraged HD broadcasting by discouraging SD channels.

wow! thats a lot for one tv channel on its own. no wonder they wont go HD on saorview soon on their own.

What the cost of a mux?

2rn charge RTÉ about €6m to transmit a mux. RTÉ pays this plus the cost of multiplexing the channels and services, so in the region of €7m.

Thos charges are based on the current use of the muxes. Currently the second mux is not fully populated (in fact the two muxes are about 1.2 or 1.3 muxes worth) I would guess, a mux costs about €4m or €5m including multiplexing. However, due to the costing method foisted on them, 2rn cannot charge a scale that would encourage use.

They say the charges will fall if a third mux is required, particularly if it is nearly full.

Edit: I think an analogue chnnel cost €3m. Perhaps someone who knows might enlighten us.

The cost of unused capacity in a mux is shared by all other users. 2rn charge approx. €6m per 24.1 M/bps mux for transmission/distribution, whether the capacity is used or not.
