Came across this in my inbox.

A device to mount your mobile phone to your steering wheel. From the pics, you can mount it in other places.

Airbag + phone on steering wheel = first face mounted mobile phone?

Do you think it is unsafe, just from a distraction point of view, or is this doubly dangerous?

I think it's unsafe, but I'm not sure it that's illegal.

Think of it as Darwinism in action. Anyone stupid enough to pay €10 for a plastic clip shouldn't be behind the wheel anyway...

Is the 4th picture a Porsche?

My brother used to wedge his Nokia 6230i between the rim of his steering wheel (almost making an extra strut)... hey presto - a built in speakerphone . It is a lot smaller than a smartphone, so his view of the speedo wasn't obscured.

The above probably technically isn't illegal as you don't have to hold it to answer it (and if you can legally answer you phone by hitting a key on your steering wheel or radio, what's the difference between hitting accept on the phone itself?).

I do think it is a bit silly to put such a large object right in your field of vision though.

It's pretty lethal if your airbag goes off and your iPhone ends up embedded in your face!

Not to mention it's blocking the view of your speedometer.

it would be handy for a shopping trolley, not so much a steering wheel

The way the airbag deploys would just push the phone out of harms way instead of in your face

would you trust leaving your phone on a shopping trolley while you get stuff from shelfs? I know I wouldn't,

Maybe - given the design of the mount it does look like it would 'hinge' on the rim of the steering wheel - but given the huge initial force and the narrow cross-section of the mount (compared to the phone) - I'd be concerned that it would launch the phone into the air - I certainly wouldn't want one.

Its more likely that the phone would swing back behind the airbag instead of into the drivers face.

Well, still wouldn't want to test it!

The part of the steering that the bottom of the phone is resting on is pushed out of the way upon deployment of the airbag. I'm pretty sure the phone would go with it.

This thing would be useless for navigation, when you turn your wheel the phone would think you are making a turn therefore giving you the "re-routing" line every 2 minutes!

Phone GPS is not sensitive enough to detect such a tiny change in position, and a change in orientation of the phone would cause the map to rotate but it shouldn't cause it to recalculate.
