    Hi everyone.
We have a 18in fireplace but want to change the surround and front of the fireplace. I recently got a 16inch cast iron front which has a grate and front grill included with it. Would we b able to just slide the front into the fireplace opening, or do we have to get a smaller fire back..Any advice on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

You more than likely have an 18in fireback so if you wanted to fit a 16in grate and front the existing fireback would need to be changed.

Thanks for replying. Wud I have to fill in the gap behind the back? Can I do this myself or do I get in a professional?

If you are going to get a pro in to fit your fireplace they will fit it then.If you intend to do it yourself there's a fair bit to it first you have to remove the old fireback and the back fill around it and remove the concrete hunching at the top of the fireback. Then move new f/b in to position and back fill with vermiculite or a mix of sand ,cement, and lime at a ratio of 6-1-1.
The next step is to haunch the fireplace with is mixing up sand and cement and fill it on top if f/b and backfill thus has to be smooth as it stops any soot building up on the f/b.Then the gap that's left between the f/b and the fire surround has to be filled with fire rope and fire cement.
As I said there's a lot to it or a pro would charge in the region of €150-€210
