Aye, I noticed that too when I tried reposting it for you.

I dunno, they ain't cheap for a nice spec but they are everything to everyone. They cover all bases. If I could fuel one for my commute I'd have a GTI as a daily. Theyre the kind of car that are hard to fault. The other car for everyone is an Auris/Corolla and I'd rather herpes tbh.

"Where for decades the Beetle and thus rear-mounted engines and rear-wheel drive had dominated the scene, a new era had now dawned: that of the transversely mounted front engine and front-wheel drive."

wouldn't exactly point that out as a good thing...

The way it's written, you'd almost think the Golf was the first car to adopt this layout

Golf are nice but the new auris doesn't seem to be a bad car tbh. It seems to be a vast improvement on the old model and looks decent enough too.

The new corolla on the other hand though looks horrible imo.

Always liked golfs. The prices seem a bit mad though. Even the 00 golfs are going for insane money??

    That's actually a comfortline...just saying...diesel too if I'm not mistaken.

Thing is you could pick any of it's competitors in a basic spec and they all look equally pants. But there is a model in the range for everyone. Whereas toyota give you the choice of one petrol and one diesel here in the Auris and nowhere near the level of customization.

I owned a 1.6 petrol Highline from 2002 (new) to 2006. It didn't set the world on fire (I was coming from a ST182 Celica) but it was a decent enough. I had to pay through the nose for stuff I'd consider standard (or even old hat) these days (AC, CD player) and I had to go to the Highline spec. to get the all-around leccy windows and alloys. One creature comfort that I'd love to have again was the winter pack - the heated seats (mmmm) were great and the headlamp washers were nice to have. It's a resilient auld machine as well; 12 years later, it's still going strong having been owned by my dad and now my brother. The only NCT issue it had was the last one where the replacement battery my brother put in wasn't snug in the holder, which was easily remedied.

not taking away from their milestone. just pointing out that most models in Ireland until very recently have been disappointingly basic in my opinion, even when comparing to its competitors basic model standards. in 02/ 03 some of the last mk4's still didn't even have electric windows.

Baseline/Trendline were extremely basic in terms of luxury spec unless you went for a comfortline or up. They were a cheap option that no one went. In terms of safety spec though they were always more than the opposition which no one ever gives them credit for. ABS, side airbags and 4 disc breaks in 1998 was very unusual.

Those are mighty hub caps, the VW badge of two of them have fallen off mine so I have strategically placed them on the same side.

Best stick some of those on my DIY project list :p

    Sought after + reliable + VW badge = $$$$

Go look at the price of 00 Yaris's if you really want a shock.

I always liked them but personally i'm not a big fan of the MkVII. It looks very dull compared to the MkVI.

Even by the (low) standards of the day, the poverty spec Mk4 Golfs were a disgrace. No electric windows, not even central locking! No rear headrests either.

That said, side airbags, disc brakes at the rear and ABS was novel for a car that size in 1998 (especially in backward old Ireland), sure some cars a size up only had two airbags and drum brakes as standard back then.

Oddly enough, of the Golf/Corolla/Focus trio, the Golf is now the only one with a/c as standard, and the Golf has had it as standard since 2007!

All mark 4s had central locking! Whether it stayed working or not is another thing......
