    Hi,

Just looking for some advice, know nothing about cars to be honest.

06 VW Golf, going in for NCT next weekend so booked in for service today. Guy said needs lower wishbone bushes front axil, leak starting from radiator and oil leak from crankshaft. Just wondering how much I'm looking at? Sounds like a lot. Guessing it won't pass NCT with these issues? Should I reschedule NCT, get these fixed and then bring it in?

    Thanks for reading.

I would not be getting anything done until after it goes through the NCT otherwise you could be making two trips to the garage. Then get a price from a different garage to compare. Did the garage that serviced it today not give you a quote for the work?

I agree with this,i thought my car had a whole host of issues prior to the nct but decided to put it in and just see what they say,i was expecting a booklet of failures from the test, turns out I only have 2 issues to correct, just put it in and let them tell you what needs doing!

the labour is going to be the expensive part.... the crankshaft oil seal depending on which one it is means either the gearbox will have to come off or the timing belt

Just to add that the NCT is a roadworthiness test, not a mechanical worthiness test so you may pass the NCT but still need the things that the garage highlighted fixed. So my point simply is, make one trip to the garage after the NCT as opposed to one before and another after.

Neither of those issues are bad because your car need NCT. Simply all three can lead to much more serious and expensive problems if not looked after. (ball joint eating off other suspension parts, radiator leak can lead to overheating, oil seal leak can lead to oil starvation/clutch failure.)

Just an update. Passed the NCT at the weekend. But going to get the stuff mentioned previously fixed up so i can keep the car running smoothly for the next 2 years.

I rang the garage that did the service and they have given me a quote of :

wishbone bushes front axil : €240
leak starting from radiator : €230
Oil leak from crankshaft : €275

Does this seem reasonable or would i be better off getting it done in a VW garage?

    Thanks again

Good to read through a thread with a stated problem, and then an update as to what the outcome was.

Those repair prices seem a little on the high side though (depending what the issues are with the crankshaft / radiator). €240 to replace a wishbone bush does seem high though; the part itself is ~€60, let's say the garage is charging €60 / hour. That means they're allocating three hours to the job.... which is simply too much to change a wishbone.

Leak from radiator could be anything, price would totally be dependant on where the leak is coming from (i.e, from the radiator unit itself or from a pipe/tube somewhere)

oil from crankshaft case, pass. dunno.

Forgot to say; go to a VW dealer and get a quote, you might be surprised.

the bushes for the mk5 are fairly cheap...if i remember correctly they are about 7 or 8 euro for the front bush and about 25 or 30 for the rear bush...radiator i wouldnt like to guess at and the crank shaft oil seal depending if it is front or rear could be anywhere from 10 euro to 60 euro. As i said the expensive part is the labour... the crank shaft oil seal if its the rear one the gearbox has to come out....might as well inspect the clutch while you are that far in..if its the front seal you might as well do the timing belt while you are at it.
