Taking time off for exams

I just have a quick question here guys.

I started work with a company about three months ago. They asked me to do a certificate exam, they're paying for it.

Now, I'm doing the exam sometime in the next few days and they've told me that I'm not entitled to study leave (which I'm okay with), but also that I'm not even entitled to take a half day to do the exam itself, and I have to apply for it as holiday leave?

I mean, they're making me do the certification and now I have to take it as a holiday? Is that right, I mean I thought I would've been entitled to literally the hour or two off to do the actual exam?

I wouldn't take time off to do something that a company wants me to do.

If they asked you to do it, and they're paying for it, and you probably wouldn't have done it otherwise, then I definitely wouldn't take the day or half day out of my holidays. That's completely ridiculous on their behalf.
