New wheels for race bike ?

    Hi,

I want to get a new set of wheels for my bike. Recently some spokes came loose on front and back wheels and although my LBS got new spokes fitted I think I could do with a new set of wheels and keep the old pair as back up. I did crash the bike once and the wheels have never been perfectly straight since (even though they were set by the LBS).

My bike is a Cannondale Super Six 105 Carbon 2012

The wheels are : Mavic Aksium Wts

Should I go with Mavic again or is there a stand out choice ? I don't really want to spend anything more than €300. I have found Mavic ok throughout the year but I have never tried anything else. I would like to get the cassette fitted also.

The wheels you've got cost about 250 new so whatever you get are going to be fairly similar in spec to the Aksiums at that price. Fulcrum 3's and Campagnolo Zonda's come in around the 350 price range but are both really good wheelsets.

cool. well I might as well spend the extra €50 and get the slight upgrade. I have a Shimano 105 5700 cassette to fit as well.

I don't know where you see the Fulcrum 3 at €350 though ? Wiggle has Fulcrum 3 at €400 - €491. Wiggle has Campagnolo Zonda's at €348 but the wheel design looks funny

Hard to pass this for value if the Op can stretch the budget a little more (aren't we all great at spending other peoples money), one of the lads in our club got a set last week, 4 days for delivery.

Are they the same set ? Seem to get 5 star out of 5 on a quick Google search. They aren't cheap at €400 but I would stick with Mavic though.

I have a Cassette: Shimano 105 5700, 12-27, 10-Speed that I would need to fit myself to go with them.

Tyres seem to have to be purchased for them specifically.

What do you want out of your wheels?

If reliability and serviceable wheels are important @letape had campagnola record hubs with open pro rims for sale in adverts subforum.

Don't know seller but he always has really good stuff for sale. On mobile so can't link

The cassette takes about two minutes to change. It's not a hard job and I'm sure someone on here would loan you the tool or do it for you. Think the Fulcrum's might have been on sale when I saw them. The Zonda's look fairly cool when they're actually on the bike.

I do some cycling (mise), more in the summer than the rest of the winter. Nothing race like but do like the bike to go as fast as possible with few possible break downs. I came home from a 160km only to have the spokes come lose, I was so lucky to make it home. I reckoned the time I came off the time (after my tyres blew on sharp stones on a new road) I messed the rims up.

I would rather buy the new wheels from a shop than adverts. I don't really fancy the zonda's looks even though they are probably highly recommended.

I know nothing about putting on a new cassette but I did get another lbs to do it for me. Maybe he will do it again. Looks there is a special tool indeed though

The chain whip and cassette tool are cheap and easy to use. You don't technically need a chain whip but it makes it easier.

It's handy to be able to change your own cassettes.

I have a set of 2012 mavic kyrsium elites. Only used them last summer and was off bike for 6 weeks during that time.
Shimamo 10 speed cassette and conti GP4000s tyres. €300.
Was gonna put them up in adverts section.

Yuck! They're doing it all wrong! That shifting spanner is too loose and will either slip and damage the tool or slip and damage the mechanic. It's much easier to stand the wheel on the ground and use a socket and bar.

How do you do it without a chain whip?

A good grip with a cloth and some plasters for afterwards..

I suppose you could stand on the pedal with the rear brake pulled to keep the cassette tight. Then either kick the wrench with your other foot or have someone else do it.

Thanks for the post! They look a bit used tbh. I would like to get them new or new'ish.

I am going to ask a LBS to fit the cassette for me.

It seems like the Mavic Ksyrium Elite S WTS Wheelset look the best value for money on that german site.

What about Ultegra 5800 wheels? Anybody have opinions of then. They are about €300 and quite light. Had been tempted to get a pair.

I have a pair of rs80's which would be similar, I like them. I like the 16/20 spoke set up and its hard to beat the shimano quality tbf.

How do you propose to get the lock ring remover in place while the wheel is on the bike?!!

I see them on wiggle for €295.69. Out of stock at the moment though. Another 2 - 4 weeks.

Have them on Bike24 for €280. Not sure what shipping would be.

Sorry to hijack thread a little. Fourth spoke has just popped out on my rear wheel since Christmas so looking for a reasonable priced wheelset to replace the stock wheels on my bike. Don't want to spend too much because I hope to upgrade my bike during the summer. The shimano r501 look like good value with decent reviews. Any opinions? Thanks.

The r501s came with my bike and they're bullet-proof but a bit heavy. Great commuter wheels.

Nearly €20 cheaper here. Ok wheel I'd personally spend a little more and get Aksiums or Fulcrum 7 will still be decent training wheels for the your new bike.

It's a race bike for road. I was looking for something lighter and stronger than what I have at the moment.

I've just purchased a pair of Campag Zondas. No miles done yet but they feel and look great! Exact weight is 1,573 grams without skewers or cassette.

Only €321 from swimcyclerun.com, based in Athy. Better than all the other online prices pretty much (saw them for €299 plus postage in Germany).

No connections (first purchase), but got them the next day. Great service.

Cool. I see they have Mavic Aksium S White 2014 Wheelset with Tyres pre-installed for €234.99. There is an option to install a cassette but will they install your cassette ? You need those quick release catches/skewers ??

Anyone have any real world experience of the Zonda's with a 90kg rider on board?
Can't change the bike, it's a basic Allez but would like to change the wheels to something nicer....
I see on Swim Cycle Run they have Zonda's at a good price or perhaps the Scirocco...at a stretch the Mavic Cosmic Elte also...so I guess I am asking about all 3 :D
I just do club spins, no racing or any of that, and would like a step up from the basic Alex Rims on the bike.

    Cheers,

    Cheers,

I'm 85kg and have the zondas for over a month now. No issue with them at all. When I first got them I expected to notice the difference between them and a very bad set of stock wheels and was disappointed to not really notice any advantage.
But just this weekend gone I was out on a sportive with my brother. We are both the same height and weight and we noticed that while freewheeling downhill, he would crouch down on the bike whereas I would sit up on the hoods, but I would pick up much more speed than he would! We put this down to the Zondas. Glad I got them.

They will fit. Just make sure you buy the Shimano-freehub version (not Campag).

Great. My Cassette is : Shimano 105 5700, 12-27, 10-Speed so I will go with the Shimano freehub as you say. I will order a new cassette off wiggle and try to install that myself.

If you only need the wheels for 10speed drivetrain, these will save you a few quid.

Buy them all here, and get the cassette installed for free,

Very little difference in the price and SCR are in Athy if you have any issues later.

The german website is selling the Mavic Aksium White WTS Wheelset HG S 10-place rotor for €139.99 plus shipping. Its quite a bit less than Irish or U.K sites at around €230 ?

i think the mavic tires i have got with mavic wheelsets arent great for holding out punctures. I got few punctures with them so changed to gatorskins and gp4000s and no problems since.

They're an older model 2012/2013 and come with 10 speed hub. Come with mavics own tyres and tubes, 100% genuine, have ordered this wheelset and other gear from here before.

Aren't mavic hubs all 11 speed compatible anyway?

Yeah, 11 speed without the spacer. As the link I posted had 10 speed I didn't want to confuse further.....and failed!

The German site's price is ex-vat - you need to add 19% to it. Still good value but if I were buying another set it'd be from swimcyclerun.
