mk3 (05) mondeo stiff gear change 1st+Reverse

I bought a 2005 mondeo last week. I haven't been using it yet, as I am still waiting on logbook to tax.

I noticed the gear change when going to 1st gear or into reverse is quite stiff at first. It is harder to change gear within the first couple of minutes of starting up. The other gears slide in with little effort, but 1st and reverse need a bit of force. This is really something that will drive me crazy to the point of getting rid of the car. I have read that an oil change could fix this, specifically Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 Fully Synthetic MTF (Replaces SMX S 75w-85)

Any opinions on this and also how much oil would be needed for a full change?

If it uses the mtx gearbox the fill plug is under the air filter box. The drain plug is on the front side. I would put some grease on the linkage cables first to see if that helps.

Also might be worth reading this:

Just had my clutch replaced due to some slipping at low revs/high load.

Also complained to the mechanic about difficult to select gears when stationary. Sometimes it'd be impossible to get 1st without selecting 2nd first, and quite often reverse was impossible to select. I was also getting a clunking noise when changing direction.

Turns out the gearbox mount was totally shot, the rubber was shredded.

He fitted a new gearbox mount and now gear selections are like a new car, no binding, no stiffness. Brilliant.

So, it might be worth folks checking the gearbox mounting is intact before pulling the gearbox out to replace a clutch or get the gearbox looked at.

Thanks for the good advise Zstation .Its worth remembering though that the original gearbox problem iffy clutch and probably slave cyl ..probably contributed to the shredding of the gearbox mount originally and simply changing out the gearbox mount in the first place may not have been the fix at that point but its good advise any road so thanks again for taking the trouble to share this with us ..s.

Seems a common enough problem, lots of posts relating to stiff gears on mondeo's.

The mounting for the gearbox does sound like the cause of this, reading a bit more on it.
My 2005 1.8 had that problem when I got it. It got worse when the clutch was changed. Was virtually impossible to select 1st and 2nd, especially when cold. Needed a hell of a stirring on the gearstick to get it in. Took it to a Ford specialist who knew exactly the problem, he'd seen it lots before.

96.71€ for a new bottom gearbox mount fitted, problem fixed. The rubber bushing was totally collapsed on the old one, so the gearbox and engine were able to move forwards and back, putting the gearbox cables out of alignment.
