westport is a much better town than castlebar but for a day castlebar is fine. has all the big name brands at the west end of town and some nice family owned stores on main street.

the best hotel in town is the Harlequin. Another option is Breaffy House which is a few miles outside Castlebar on the dublin road, really nice setting.

Would you go a bit further and try Belmullet? Well worth a night away, great costal walks, cosy pubs, good deals in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel and a few nice spots to eat in. The costal drive out around Blacksod, Faulmore is stunning.
