Car to be off road for foreseeable (TAX)

    Hi
I've a car which will be off the road for the foreseeable. I'm only hanging onto it so that I have continuous insurance in my name.
Tax is up since end of January.
Do I need to formalise the tax situation somehow? I'm not sure yet whether I'll send it to the scrap yard or tax it down the line (it's a banger, but it goes!).
So, when I was in the tax office last, I saw a declaration of non use or something.
If I get that done on Monday, will I owe tax for Feb & March (even though not in use then)?

Can anyone tell me how the new tax thing works? Thanks.

Hmmm. Should have thought to declare it off the road in January. DOH!
Do I sign the form saying that it will be off the road, bring it to the guards and then to the tax office? Will they look for 3 months tax off me??? It will be off to the scrap yard with it if that's the case! Will that affect my insurance then for next year if I have no car (renewal due in September)?

Do nothing until you decide what you are doing with it. Once you scrap it or sell it there are no arrears as the law stands now. It's only if you tax it you will have to pay the back tax.

(you don't go near the Gards with a tax form any more)

The only thing is, I might have to tax it later (hoping to have enough to buy something better in the meantime) if I can't afford a new one. How do I avoid having to back pay tax in that event?

"Sell" it to wife, friend, brother, whoever and send off change of owner form. Then buy it back again.

Pretty much, I don't approve but it is perfectly legal to do this.(at present)

Thanks for that. Final question. If I sell it, do I need to inform the insurance company? Would it make much difference? Presumably not? Hopefully not?

    Yes you do.

Firstly you don't own the car on which the policy was taken out thus the policy is materially affected and secondly the car will end up having two policies held against it.

Yes you must inform them as you can't hold insurance on a vehicle you don't own, and afaik you are also obliged to inform your insurance company if the car is off the road.

Oh right. The thing is, how do I declare it as being off the road? Is it just the tax office I tell? Or the insurance company? Or the guards?

Gosh, why do they have to change things all the f'n time.

You have to have the tax paid up to date(all arrears paid PLUS taxed for at least three months) before you can declare the car off the road then you sign the declaration at the tax office.

Why don't you approve? If the car hadn't been on the public road it shouldn't have to pay tax, the current law was only brought in because people where abusing the old system.

What do you think they can do to stop people selling cars? The new owner can't be liable for tax on a vehicle that they didn't use.
