I bought good few cars without NCT. It would never bother me once I am happy with the car, and you get a better deal if you know the car is right.

On the other hand, once I bought a car with fresh NCT but with rear suspension gone (I knew about it though). NCT is not a guarantee that you are buying a good car.

"Ever bought a car with one" might be quicker.

I know just looking at donedeal and thinking surely if car was in good order nct it and get more money or is it just laziness

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭pcardin

Most of the cars I bought didn't had valid NCT on them. Never bothered me as a little piece of paper isn't any guaranty letter that everything is top noch with the car. Especially for those cars that are stil in once per 2 years bracket.

Bought a fiat punto once for €100 no test, needed a service and 2 tyres and it passed, got a 2 year cert with it,i got 15 trouble free months out of it,no regrets whatsoever!

Any of the cars I got with NCT's needed a lot of work and most were fit for the bin.

    I prefer non NCT'd yokes

Nearly all my first cars had none but the cars were in good condition, just lazy owners.

In the last few years though its a must (the exception my current), they still get the full look over but I prefer not to have the headache of putting it through just after buying it.

The ones on DD that get me are " 3,000 now or 4,000 tested" ... so its needs 950 worth of work for it to pass the NCT?

Plenty, but they were for parts or export.

Once got a gorgeous left hand drive E34 525 TDS with an Auto box. Had 2 days NCT left, paid €500 for it with the intention of scrapping it for parts. Drove it from Kerry to Dublin, it felt great so I decided to throw the €50 at it for the NCT. Needed two tyres and both rear lights had to be replaced, but it passed no sweat. Sold it to a mate in Germany, it's still on the road 7 years later .

Most of the vans I've bought with new DOEs were also lol cases. The transit with a new DOE and no back/hand brakes, no door locks that worked and half the bulbs blown sticks in my mind.

    my old vectra.

bought it from a dodgy looking chap with his tracksuit tucked into his trousers in a tesco's carpark. he had bought it in the UK and was passing it on immediately for a handy few quid. no test, no tax, fresh import. all the don't when it comes to car buying.

car was great. never gave me any major grief. failed the NCT on headlight alignment and rear suspension bushings if i remember correctly.

contrastingly, i bought my focus from an independent dealer, with a new NCT and 3 month warranty. on the drive home discovered the clutch was slipping in 5th. dealer says no warranty on clutch and breaks (understandably) but i hadn't owned the car an hour for **** sake.

I've bought near on 30 cars in the 8 years I'm driving. Of those, only 2 came with nct.

Great bargaining tool if you know what you're doing and willing to put a bit of work in.

Got a Citroen Xsara with NCT out for over a year or so... passed on the first go without any work that needed to be done, drove it for a year - never let me down.

Got a Vauxhall Astra with NCT for about 6 months on it... biggest pile of crap I've ever had.

I wouldn't let being NCT'd or not make up my mind as to the quality of the car, but it is nice to buy a car with a few months of a test. One less thing to be worrying about :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭kilianmanning

Yes, doesn't bother me buying cars without test, because a car can be a pile of scrap & still pass an nct.

Only reason I test cars is the fear of 5 penalty points for no test

Bought a citroen xantia for €200 a few months back, changed the oil, put droplinks & an abs sensor into it & it passed the nct yesterday

My current I got without nct, not a bother.

Bought a car from a dealer 4 years ago that had no NCT and my Insurance Company wouldn't insure it! Wouldn't transfer my insurance! Was rippin!

Had to wait a week until it was NCT'd. I have since changed Insurance Company. Still have the car!

I bought a mk3 Golf in December for €200 with no NCT, it even had 6 weeks tax. All it needed was a new Back box for the exhaust. Sold it with an NCT two months later for €650. Basically two months free driving.

They say an absolute sh1tbox worth nothing is actually worth €500 with new NCT.
So since a valid or better even new NCT is actually worth money the most likely reason for a car on offer not having NCT is that it can't get NCT unless you're pouring money into it. You really want to know your cars to make the judgement call thats its just been laziness.

Obviously that is not the same as saying a car with NCT is a safe buy.

provisionally bought another one now,50 Euro non runner but it checks out grand, judging by my previous experience of buying cars with no nct this one wont be any different,1 lady owner from new and its a 01,its all good :D

    Yeah, loads of them.
Before the NCT was brought in ;)

a new nct basically means the car is safe. It doesn't mean the car was well maintained .
    Not necessarily safe.

A car will pas the test with shock absorbers completely gone, will be very unstable to drive and not particularly safe. But yes, it will pass the NCT if that is all that matters.

A full service a year, makes it go up a gear. The NCT gets you safely to and from your destination without hassle. But servicing the car each year is the key.

what way are shocks tested in the nct? just for balance and not performance
They are tested for ballance only. I know, it is shock-ing.

    :pac:

Likewise! To answer the question asked by the OP, I bought a 1998 yoke four years ago with no NCT and haven't had a problem with it! You can be lucky or not.

I never bought a car with no NCT, but once it has a Wankel Engine I'm sure it will drive ok and pass the NCT with a good servicing.

Once a year ?? Every 10k km... minimum. .. oil and filter change.. Every 30 km new fuel filter and a once over (all fluids, wheels off to check breaks and bushings etc at least once a month..)

Do you stop halfway through your journey to change the oil and filter so?

No matter how many miles I do in a year, I always get my old car serviced without fail every year. After all, it's an old car, so it makes sense to me to have her fluidly correst for the NCT spanking.

Don't know enough about cars to buy one without an nct. No nct leaves the impression that the seller determined it was too expensive to pass the nct.

It may not be the correct impression, but an impression none the less. So-one like yourself who has more experience is in a better position to judge the overall condition of the car.

there was a time when I had no experience and done it,in actual fact my very first car had no nct,i have had 17 cars in my life time and only got caught out twice!funnily enough they were both Honda civics!but Honda aside I've never had trouble with the other non nct cars I have bought. :D
