Proof Reading Recommendations

    Howdy,

Would anyone here recommend the services of any proof readers for a MSc dissertation? I have found a couple of Irish ones on Google but I was wondering if anyone here has good reviews of anyone. I am studying in the UK and my Irish results were due to me not twigging that I was using Google.ie :p So I will check around my locality too.

I am close to the printing stage. 12,000 words in the main body of text and then around 3000 words of appendices. My supervisor has really been unhelpful regarding how the write up is coming along. Quite helpful during the practical stages, but getting him to take a look at a draft and have a discussion is not really working.

I am at the stage where my own personal proofreading sessions can show loads of notes at the beginning and middle then a drop off as I begin to snooze towards the end. I got a good tip to read it backwards, paragraph by paragraph which worked quite well but at this stage I know the text well enough that I am reading it without actually reading it if you get me.

The supervisor has the latest draft which is a complete draft. With luck, I will soon be able to sort out any content/structure issues and send it to my project reader, who I have been told should see it before it gets printed. Then all going well, I get approval and its printed.

I was thinking it would be a good idea to get it proofread just before it goes to print as someone who is independent and more experienced with the language side of things could clear up some things for me. I also do not want to waste the opportunity before getting the supervisor approval as it could be time and money down the drain depending on what has to get changed.

Light at the end of the tunnel though! =)

    Thanks all!

Have you tried reading it out loud? Works wonders for me. Sentence by sentence, short pause at every comma, longer one at each full stop. I catch a tonne of mistakes my eyes never picked up as by that stage I'm too used to seeing the words. Using the ears is using another sense, very helpful.

Get friends and family to help, a non-expert view is great for picking up on typos and spelling errors that other experts might miss.
