Qualifying for Invalidity Pension

To get Invalidity Pension you must have at least:

260 (5 years) paid PRSI contributions since entering social insurance
48 contributions paid or credited in the last complete tax year before the date of your claim.

Note that only PRSI paid in classes A, E and H count. The last complete tax year is the year before your claim. For example, if you claim Invalidity Pension in 2014, the last complete tax year is 2013.

Does this mean even though you meet or may well far exceed the 5yrs of contributions, if you dont have the required prsi/credits for the last tax year before you make your claim, then you won't qualify.

That would be my interpretation of the criteria you have posted. Most people apply for IP (invalidity pension) are normally in receipt of illness benefit prior to going on IP and would therefore have credited contributions. tbh the same applies to any benefit claim... for jobseekers benefit you could have for the sake of argument 500 a class contributions but you dont have the the required contributions in the the gcy which for jsb this year is 2012 they you will not qualify.

Yes, but as eastbono says, these don't necessarily have to come from employment, they can come from a social welfare payment. Mine came from Illness Benefit.

Its my partner who has been on DA for years, but was on a CE for 6yrs
    19/09/05 – 23/09/2011. then back to DA

but here's the problem after that was on a 1.5yr Fas training course
19/07/12 - 21/03/2014 for people with disabilities and only got a J9 stamp which is useless to him.

I don't suppose he would have got credits as well!

If not seems very harsh to put people on these types of course and in so doing breaks their prsi record and could be for good.

Why does he want Invalidity Pension? Its only €5 more and if your friend can find part time work its much easier to sort out if he's on DA.

I know its only €5 more but that's €260 per year and that would pay a bill or two and has no savings at all. He'll never work again as has a range of health problems, he had to quit the 2 day a week course he was on as it was too much for him.

That's a pity really. Its hard to keep going.
