Scared I've been exposed to HIV?

I'm 21 and did something stupid.

I know this sounds redic. I hooked up with a random guy the other night and brought him back to my place. I'm btm but we didn't have any lubricant. He dry humped me for a while so after a good bit of time, it felt like his head might have gone in (not far at all though) At that stage, I asked him to put on a condom if he was going to continue.

I also gave him head. (Without a condom). He says he's clean but I have it in my head now that I've been exposed to HIV as I've come down with a cold.

Am I being completely over dramatic or is there some truth in this?

Symptoms of HIV in most cases, if not all, do not show up until months afterwards, so the fact that you are showing symptoms of a cold is not a big worry. Perhaps you were just getting a cold/flu anyway. There are sexual health clinics that you can go to and be tested for anything and everything, maybe you should look for your nearest one and pay them a visit.

Oh, and in future, buy some condoms and lube and keep them handy in case these sort of situations crop up again, eh? :)

If you are located in Dublin there is a free walk in clinic at St James Hospital where you can get tested for STI's.

As Paddy C said the symptoms of HIV take quite a while to physically manifest themselves, this is why it cannot be accurately tested for straight away - a test generally cannot be performed until 2-8 weeks have passed however you should not delay getting checked out as HIV is not the only STI out there.

I'm not trying to alarm you, just give you a realistic view of things. I'm sure you're fine, please do be careful in future :)

With that rather small amount of sexual contact, if you had acquired HIV, you'd be statistically rather unlucky. Obviously it's not impossible though. Precum can carry the virus and if he was uncircumcised the skin on his glans is rather thin.

Now it's more likely that you could have been exposed to any of the other STDs, especially if he often tries to have unprotected, poorly lubricated sex. So get tested in the next few months and practise safer sex in the future.

http://www.afa.org.sg/act/25/HIVSeroconversion.htm - a flu-like illness is often the first sign of a HIV infection, and rapidly enough at that.

HOWEVER - if someone you have very close contact of any kind with, let alone sexual, has a cold you're probably going to get it. Its still the season where lots of people have colds.

The chances of contracting HIV from oral sex are extremely low, although not for other STIs.
