    Hi there.

A colleage of mine is a care assistant in a hse funded service.

She has been in a care assistant role for 12 years.
However she has no formal qualifications in this area.

Our manager said to her recently she would want to do a course as she has nothing at all.

She has bern asking and asking since 2006 for the fetaclevel 5 care assistants course however management at the time funded others who already had courses.
However they did not fund her.

She has put forward her willingness to do a course but cannot afford the money to do it.
She has asked if they pay for it and they take a small amount weekly from her wages.
    They wont go with this.

She bought her house in the boom and now with a massive mortgage her wages barely cover that.

    What can she do ?
Is there any courses that would stand to her
She said she could only afford at a push 150 euro.

I suppose too she is afraid that she could loose her job but that woukd not be a route an employer would take would it ?
She has asked and asked but was always refused.
She is a great worker real kind and caring and im surprised she has recieved no help/ support over the years.

    Any ideas.?

    Thanks

She will need to get her level 5. She should contact her ETB to see if they are running a BTEI course that suits.

She really has no choice, and shouldn't be employed there unless she has, or is working towards gaining a FETAC Level 5 in Health or Community Care (see HIQA Standards). Her employer is under no obligation .to pay for the training, and clearly they have no intention of doing so. Her only option for a free course is BTEI, if she qualifies.

Other than that, the cheapest she will get is €120 per module

Ok great thanks il pass that on to her.
What can they do to staff who refuse to get educated ?

Another colleaue in early 50 s supposodly has a phobia of writing ,course work, or study which she says having to do anything leads to a decline in her mental health she is the other and only person who does not have any education regarding the work place.

Which with her i think education is definitly needed ( big time )

All staff employed as healthcare assistants are required to be educated to FETAC level 5 (Healthcare Support) as per HIQA guidelines. I am very surprised that the HSE aren't all over this. I know of one hospital where all healthcare assistants, no matter how long they had been employed, had to do the level 5 course, whether they were in their 20s or a year from retirement, and it had to be done within a certain amount of time. The hosital paid for the course and provided study leave. It's a pretty important requirement that HIQA look at.

With regard to who pays for the training, that is between the employer and employee, but I think in most cases where the employee has been employed for a significant period of time, they employer will pay, again to meet the HIQA requirements.

Is she in a union? They should be able to help and should have experience of this as it's come up a lot over the last few years. That's who I would be talking to if I were her.

    Thanks for that
Yes they gave out funding for courses like hot cakes there a few yrs back
However at the time the original person was refused funding and it was given to others ( those with degrees in social care etc )
However now that all funding has dried up for courses.
But yes im surprised HR have not been onto them both more as they have been updating their files etc and telling us what we need on our hr file.

    Ok il pass on info.

    Many thanks
