My NCT is next week and I want to check if the lack of a plastic cover for the rear of exterior driver side mirror is problematic?

I'd imagine it would be a problem, as in the event of clipping a pedestrian or cyclist, it has the potential to do more serious damage than with the cover attached.

You can go to the NCT website where it gives a list of failure criteria.

It'll fall under the sharp edges rule.
If you fail on only that then it will be a free visual retest.

    Quick answer: possibly.

Bit of foam, sheet of plastic and some duct tape should hide those sharp edges

What car is it? Might be available at a breakers and can always be painted to match if needed. Most of these covers are accessed by removing the actual mirror. generally you tilt the mirror backwards as far as possible, so that the front outer edge of the mirror is standing slightly proud of the housing. It should then clip out by pulling outwards and back slightly. Once removed, the mirror cover can be replaced and is usually held in place either with screws or studs on the inside of the cover itself. These studs pass through the mirror housing and are held in place using those "star" or "griplock" washers.

Is it an electric mirror? I'd be far more worried about water getting in to the electrics of my car than whether it is an nct fair tbh.

I was told by a tested that all sharp edges that are taped up are no longer sharp edges there fore can not fail.

Yea its electrical but it hasnt done it any harm. Its my own laziness that it gone on so long. I have a cover which I got when I bought a replacement generic mirror and I hadn't got around to spraying it. I actually sprayed/clear coated it yesterday and while it turned out very well for the most part, there's a bit of an imperfection on the lower edge of side facing the door.

I obviously laid on the clear coat a bit too heavy on that side and it 'bubbled' just at the bottom edge which also damaged the paint meaning the primer can be seen through it but only along the edge for about 10mm. Anyway thankfully its not visible unless the mirror is fully folded. If I wasn't such an amateur I would obviously repair it but I'm worried Id simply make it worse. Given that it was my first foray into spray painting I'm happy enough to have got away so lightly!
