LPT - payment has not been taken from bank account

Hope this is posted in the correct place first of all.

I signed up for my LPT to be taken via the Single Debit Authority which was due to be taken from my bank a/c on 21 March. Nothing happened so I rang the helpline and a recorded message said it may take 3 working days for this to happen.

On the 26th, I received a letter from the Revenue (dated 19 March) stating my payment (payment due 13 March!) was returned to my bank!

Firstly, how could the LPT payment be returned to bank before it was due to be taken out and also the payment date was incorrect.

I rang the Revenue and after a wait of 20 mins finally spoke to someone who said the letter was an error and they would call me back in 7 days. Not to take out the payment that was due but to let me know about this error.

Has this happened to anyone else?

    Thanks :(

Got something similar the other day.
    It reads :

    Dear Sir/madam,

The payment of €x covering : LPT Period 1/1/2014 to 31/12/2014 has been returned by the bank unpaid.

Please contact your bank directly should you require any clarification. This payment has been cancelled on your account with the Revenue Commissioners.

If outstanding balances remain, a payment should be made as soon as possible.

    Michael Gladney
    Collector General

Read it about 20 times and its equally cryptic each time.

My various confusions and guesses to decipher it are :

    - what bank is 'the' bank
    - was the LPT trying to pay me for my property tax? If so, why ?
    - if so, and it was 'my' bank, why did my bank send it back to them ?
    - what does returning it 'unpaid' mean anyway: was money returned or not? Or did they 'return' €0 of it and so didnt really return it at at all and I am €x richer (hasnt appeared in my account yet though if so) ?
    - if I wanted clarification, why does he suggest getting another body to explain what he has written to me ?
    - I tried to phone Mr Gladney using the number on the letter but could not get through to a human. One of the automated options in it did give another number to call if the matter was an LPT one (so why the other ph number on the letter?). So I tried that one one. Left hanging in a queue with a waiting time of 12 minutes. My need for clarification wasnt that desperate so I gave up.
    - A payment has been cancelled. I follow that bit. But, I guess this means either, they were trying to send me €x and since my bank sent it back to them, they will not try to send it to me again. Or, if I owed them money (though it mentions nothing about me paying them, nor has any payment been made from my account), it has now been cancelled and I no longer owe it.
    - I am not sure if I owe anything, but, if I do, it is left up to me to pay it whenever suits me. And it will be quite a while before it does suit me.

    Any other interpretations welcome.

Was there sufficient funds in your account? I forgot to put it in the account so it said it was returned. I got through to the helpline eventually and they said I would have to pay another way as the SO mandate only allows one request for payment. They transferred me to another dept to pay but after waiting 15 minutes I went online and changed payment to debit card

    There were.

    What was returned ?

Was your letter the same one ?

I have the same issue. .. funds were in my account in good time for the 21st, although the letter from collector general is dated the 19th but the funds were available then too!

I cannot get through to the 1890 200 255 helpline.... I am not even getting the automated response!

Any more updates from those of you who have already posted?

Is it possibly a SEPA Issue?

They are a total joke.I have been trying to pay the lpt online for weeks. They wont take it!A message comes up saying 'Still processing your previous payment'
I have contacted them four times via email explaining this and providing all my details each time in the mail. They keep emailing back asking me to . . . ( you guessed it!) . . . 'Provide them with my details'
Its a farce.Like anything to do with this excuse for a Government.

A couple of seconds with Google will give you Michael Gladney's Email and phone Number, if you want to ask him (or more likely his PA) directly what they are up to.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Could it be that people entered the bank account wrong on the LPT system?

I would check your LPT account - make sure it is showing as unpaid - and then either check the bank details you entered were correct - if bot fix them or select another payment method. Some info on the letters here...

Generally either an error on Revenue's behalf or could be a singular incorrect bank detail, etc. I would check your LPT account and make sure it still says "Change Payment Method" when you log in. If it does, click it and either re-submit your bank details or set up a new method of payment.

I had the same issue, OP. In the end, it turned out that my bank refused to issue the payment because the account was a savings, rather than current, account.

I had sufficient credit in my account and it is a current account but I got the same letter.

I rang my bank about it and they said it is a SEPA issue and the revenue were using the old codes instead - (yet, my brother is also with AIB and his was deducted on 21st March). They gave me an iban and bic code to give to the revenue. But of course I couldn't get through to them.

I sent an email to lpt@revenue.ie with the details the bank gave me but have not heard anything back from them!

Yes, of course. I did check the details first in case I was the one at fault. All bank details were correct.

Anyway, I finally tried last night at 19.45 and got through. I was told thousands of people have had the same issue. I finally paid by debit card.

Deadline has been extended to tomorrow 2nd April.

    Update on my orig post.

When I received letter from Revenue, I rang my bank to find out what had happened. They informed me money was never requested. I did give correct account no and sort code.

Never got a call back so rang helpline again on 2 April and paid again by Single Debut Authority as this was what I was
told I had to do. Was told to check acc to see when money is taken out. As of today, money still there!

My blood pressure must be sky high with the stress.

They will probably have to choose a specific date to rerun all the Single Debits that have not yet been processed. It's not like a debit card deduction.

Would you believe... same problem this year 2015. Letter from bank when Single Debit Authority payment due saying payment not gone through. Contact my bank.
Right account number, sufficient funds... Rang my bank and they said that a lot of people reporting a problem.
I have logged an enquiry on my LPT account and I hope that they will take it at a later date.
What a hassle. 2014 was annoying enough but 2015 too!
