IT problems with management

Anybody have the problem where a senior person in work thinks oh lets have this thing done to the computer system, which in turn might take a few days to actually do, but they snap when they find out it takes more than a damn hour?

    It actually kills me.

Someone somewhere- possibly a vendor- set unrealistic expectations- and you are the unfortunate who is taking the flak for it. It happens a lot more frequently than you'd imagine- I've had 'something that will just take a few minutes of your time' turn into an epic 16 hour overnight job that I didn't even get a thankyou for (and no- I don't work overnight normally).

    Life is too short.

It's all about setting realistic expectations - do they just tell you to do it, or do they ask what is involved.
Your best bet would be to treat anything like this as a mini project - follow the same stages, just condense them
    - have a quick requirements gathering meeting (10 mins) & scope the work
    - Analysis stage - 10 mins to outline what really needs to be done and how to do it (include effort & resources required)
    - present to management & discuss - 10 minutes
It makes it easier for management to evaluate Costs versus Benefit & they are empowered in the decision making process and you have sidestepped any future issues with how long project take

You need to put in a process to give estimates.

The senior person has to be told that there is a process.

There are lots of things that can be fixed or changed in a system that takes less than an hour. The problem is the processing and testing of such changes end up taking a day and longer.

If he is flipping out when given the estimates somebody has to make it clear that the estimates are based on real life timings.

Are there other people at his level that can talk to him and explain he has to rely on the experts knowledge.

I have seen this from both sides where IT people exaggerate timings and clueless managers accept this. At some point the manager found out and then assume all timings are lies so constantly flipping out over every estimate. I am sure when he moved on he treated all IT staff the same. He could be your boss now!
