Have been looking at the new VRT legislation as I am considering importing a car from the North. The new rules allow 30 days for registration for the date of purchase and 7 days from the date of purchase to book the car into a NCT centre for assessment. My question is does one have to pay the VRT on the day of assessment or is one given time between the assessment and the 30 day deadline to pay the VRT?

You have 7 days to book your VRT inspection (assessment)... That doesn't mean your assessment needs to be done within 7 days.
It's just 7 days to book it. So all you need to do within this 7 days is give them a ring or book it online.

Assessment itself must be within 30 days.
And in vast majority of cases, you will pay your VRT during the assessment. Your registration number will be issued there and then.

Thanks for that. Gives me a little time to get my own car sold to pay for the VRT so! How accurate are the VRT estimates provided on revenue.ie VRT calculator?

I suppose if you can find your car on this calculator (exact model, trim level, etc), then most likely this will be how much you pay.
I imported 2 cars over last few years, and price from calculator always matched price I paid.
