    We had a couple of rats close to that size many years ago when I was a kid. Unfortunately they died somewhere under the floorboards of my parents' bedroom, and we had to rip the floor up to get rid of the smell. The size of small cats they were!

    Sweet divine mother of Jesus, I'm going to have nightmares about that. Years ago I was out walking the dog by the estuary and I saw what I thought was a small dog dragging a big piece of plastic sheeting towards the river bank. It wasn't a dog and my own dog wouldn't let me go near the area until it had gone. Biggest frigging rat I'd ever seen. I still shudder thinking about it.

    he must have been fairly old to reach that size but I thought their lifespan was about 2 - 3 years, in the wild anyway
