I drive a 2007 Ford Focus. A few days ago, a groaning noise started coming from the back wheels, whenever I press the foot break. It's not the squeaking sound that I'd heard in my last car, when my pads started to wear out. The noise sounds...well... deeper and heavier, if that makes sense. It sounds like something you'd hear in a full lift, where the metal is groaning under all the weight, than you'd hear in a car. It started out of the blue, it wasn't a gradual thing.

Any idea what it is? Is it just just the pads on the way out and they just sound differently to other cars? I had pads put on last summer, but I don't remember where. I could feel the brakes start to become less responsive and I had them serviced. I don't remember hearing any noises from them at the time.

My cousin is doing her driving test in the car in 10 days time. I don't want to leave it in and have brake work done so close to her test & have her dealing with new brakes. Her instructor already thinks that her braking is a bit sharpish, so I don't want to make the brakes any sharper until after her test. But at the same time, I don't want to be driving around in an unsafe car for next 10 days.
    Cheers. :)

I have no idea. Am kinda clueless about the mechanical parts of cars. It is a Ford Focus LX if that makes any difference.
