Spanish news agency EFE reporting that a passenger plane has gone down in the water two miles off the island of Gran Canaria.

Cant find anything on Retuers myself.

Today is the anniversary of the Tenerefe air disaster involving two 747's. I think it might be a badly timed hoax. I hope so anyway.

Reuters reports Canary Islands emergency services now saying staff mistook a shipping vessel in the sea for a crashed airplane.

That could be a ship. I can see how it could be mistaken for a plane though.

There is a ferry that goes between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and is yellow if I remember correctly.

Looks like a false report, it was a ship

Still unknown, pretty weird on this exact day 37 years ago in 1977 we had the double 747 disaster in Tenerife.

All news outlets are now confirming it is a ship. Pretty crazy what a picture of a ship that looks like a plane in the sea posted on twitter can do.

How you confuse a boat with a plane is truly remarkable, who the hell released that?

For a while Sky's article said that emergency services said it was a plane into the sea. I wonder if they were lying.

Glad to hear it was a false alarm.

Might give the journalists a kick up the arse. Everyone was in a rush to be the first to report. Alerts from sky news, bbc news apps etc. Red faces all round.

It's funny that journo's are getting the blame but the f**king emergency services in the Canaries tweeted it was a plane! https://twitter.com/112canarias

Never mind the Journalists...the conspiracy theorists as-well..

"pretty weird on this exact day 37 years ago in 1977 we had the double 747 disaster in Tenerife"

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

And it seems they all went mad to report it without checking it out or getting confirmation. A colleague in work has family flying to the canaries today. That wasn't a pleasant few min for him.

But I think we are missing the real news story here. How the hell could a boat crash into the sea?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I best get on Twitter and be all informed like.

Feckin idiots + internet = digital wildfire.
