Spraying weed killer among tress

I'm looking for a bit of advise. I have about a quarter of an acre beside my house which is planted with young deciduous trees. This is the third year following planting and the height of the trees varies from about 4 ft to 7 ft.

I want to spray the grass among the trees but am wondering if it will damage the trees. I had a feeling it is ok during dormant season but if that's the case is it too late now. Buds are beginning to appear.

If it is ok is there any particular technique I should follow and what application is best to use.

I'm on the south East Coast if that matters in terms of growing season

    Thanks for any advise.

Don't spray the leaves, the spray won't affect the wood. It will be fine.
