P&D: Riddle me this...

I'm looking at P&D's half marathon programme which has a VO2Max session that I can't get my head around:

    5 x 4:00 moderately steep uphill

Sounds good, except when you factor in the recovery:

To recover run slowly for a time that lasts 50 to 90% of the duration of the interval.

So, run uphill. Turn around, job perhaps halfway back, turn, and repeat. From what I can see, either this is going to need a very long hill, or the recovery needs to be much longer. Without employing someone to drive you back down, how do you think this session should be run? Or have I got it completely wrong :o

    Not really an option, unfortunately!

what unit is the 4:00 defined as : Miles, minutes, KM's, parsec?

4 minutes. So I'm looking at 1km intervals. A 90% duration jog back would probably bring me back about 600m, so I'd need a continuous, moderately steep hill 2.5 to 3km long by my reckoning.

Or just find a circular route or a road (through forestry/open mountain side) which zig-zags up but allows you to take a (steeper) short-cut back down?
Or a very big field - uphill along two sides of a triangle and down the third side. Simple trigonometry really:)

I don't know where you are based but if it was Dublin I'd be looking at Howth or Three Rock etc

Leave a bike at the top of the hill ;)

I like that one - an elegant theory anyway. Just not enough to actually try it though!

    1) leave bike on top of hill
    2) trot down
    3) run up
    4) freewheel down
    5) run up
    D'oh!

Leave 4 bikes on top of hill.... now you're talking.
