    Bit of a misleading article title.



    Could be disease. Could be inbreeding. Could be famine. Could be any one of many harsh eviromental conditions.


    Could also be argued that inbreeding would have almost been a certainty at some point due to humans wiping out mammoths in huge numbers and in doing so decreasing the breeding pool.


    Seem to remember a similar problem with Bison, and if not for very careful breeding programmes over the years the wild population would have been plagued by inbreeding along with catarrhal fever, and would most likely be extinct by now otherwise.
