Was playing Arklow today and met a guy there who was playing Barton cup against Mount Wolsely last week. He told me they beat them 3-2 but got thrown out for playing a player with only three cards in

Yeah, I think they changed/clarified that rule recently. It's not just loss of that match if a player is later found to be ineligible. It's DQ for the team.

With the amount of score tracking websites there are these days, golfnet, HDID etc, there's really no excuse to make that mistake any more.

You are spot on it has changed from three cards in the previous year to four. But to not check that one out is a major mistake. They had actually won two matches away to get the win so I'd say they were right p....d off.

It was always 4 cards. Actually what they changed (clarified really) is that the whole team was DQ for one player being ineligible. Previously, there had been some confusion and decisions made where the wrongful players game was just deemed lost.

There's only one tracking site, golfnet, everything else is only a spin off (and not always accurate).
You're right though there is no excuse for not getting this right, the fault lies with the team manager IMO.

Teams fielding players on the margins of eligibility is yet another indicator of how rotten the whole interclub teams competitions are.
    1) How can a handicap be accurate if someone has only returned four cards in over a year........it most probably isn't.
    2) How could a captain legitimately judge that person to be in good form to represent his club......he cannot. But he probably knows how incorrect the handicap is but doesnt care, therefore, ideal team candidate.
    3) The step to fielding a player who doesnt even have the requisite 4 cards, is then not such a big step....nor the feigned surprise "only 3!. You played a lot last year ! You must have loads of cards in. I didnt even think to check you, you were out so much.......well, I suppose it was lots of interclub golf though, you were on three different teams werent you. Then there's all the fourballs, and classics, and scrambles."

Was on the Druids team, gutted we lost! Athy lads were very solid at home.

Best of luck to them in the final.

It is, this was only our third year in it so it would have been great for us to get to the final or even win!

The athy lads had a good story, last time they were in the final apparently was 47 years ago. One if the members who played in that final was at the club to spectate which was amazing. The embers brought him around in a cart cos of his age.

We played Birr in the final, they were at home first and we won our match on the 21st, so happened we played the same two lads in our home leg and beat them on the 19th with an eagle...great memories.:)

What a great competion. I have great memories and a couple of not so great ones too. Firstly the not so great. Myself and my partner who were ment to be a banker were taken in on the 11th hole one day. I wanted to crawl under a rock and die. The great was winning it with my club for the only time. Talk about highs and lows.
