ROS - cannot renew cert.

Is anyone else having problems with ROS at the moment?

I keep getting reminders to renew my Java cert before the 27 (i.e. tomorrow).
However, when I log in it prompts me for my existing password, and to create a new password and when I hit the renew button, nothing happens at all. It's just totally unresponsive.

However, I can log into ROS and PAYE Anytime by just skipping it.

    Anyone else having this issue?

I've tried deleting the Java browser plugin and re-installing Java and I've used several browsers. It will only work in Firefox.

(I'm on a Mac running OS X 10.9.2 (i.e. latest version) and Java is definitely up to date. Version 7 Update 51)

It's not that I need to do anything urgently now, but I don't want to be rushing to get certs re-issued come the pay and file deadlines.

It's usually java is the issue . Or security settings but trying a different browser usually sorts the later . Can you copy your cert to another laptop / computer to see if it works .

I'll just let it expire and apply again / use the code they sent out and see if I can re-register tomorrow.

I solved the problem, but it's actually quite insecure.

You have to go into Safari's preferences for internet plug ins and 'manage websites'. Then set ROS.ie for "unsafe mode"

It allows ROS to access files and folders on the system.
Apple actually recommends never doing that.

They really need to come up with a better solution than these Java certificates for ROS. It's going to become more and more cu

Other systems, like online banking, face much bigger security risks i.e. someone could potentially steal money from them. However, they manage to do things without all this fuss.

they really need to get rid of java altogether

I'm not leaving it in 'unsafe mode'. I'll be switching on safe mode again immediately when I'm finished using ROS.

That's certainly a fairly huge trouble shooting task for your average Mac user though. I've an IT background and it took me quite a bit of digging around to figure out what was going on and I wasted a load of time trying different browsers and re-doing java updates.

Your average user who knows how to browse the internet and type emails and stuff would be really struggling!

    Hardly what you'd call user-friendly.

Two-factor log ins using your mobile phone and SMS like some banks do, or a fob like AIB use would make a lot more sense.
