I am planning a trip to spain over the next few months, thinking about barcelona, plan on doing hiking and some sight seeing, we are a small group looking for accomodation and travel. tried expedia/trivago but might get flights with ryanair and stay in hostels around the city.
has anyone done something similair to this before and have any tips?

Definitely think you should go with the Ryanair/hostel idea. I've been doing this recently and having small trips around Europe and you can't beat how cheap it is. And tbh if you are a young group you will have a lot more fun in a hostel then a hotel. Just go to one of the main hostel booking websites (hostelworld or hostelbookers), put in your dates and sort by rating and pick one of the highest rated hostels (make sure it has a large number of reviews too) and you can't really go wrong. Of course read some reviews to see what sort of atmosphere it is. If you're willing to stay in a shared room, you'll get prices for about €10 - 25 a night per person (depending where you go of course).

For example, this place: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Hostel-One-Paralelo/Barcelona/51396 and also this one http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Barcelona-Central-Garden/Barcelona/67131 both were placed in the top 10 small hostels in the world in the 2014 "Hoscars" so would be worth checking out both in Barcelona (I find small hostels are better for meeting people and the staff generally have more social events going on in the evening).

Also, flights to Barcelona are very cheap for May with Ryanair atm, you're looking at about €60 - €80 return depending on the dates you pick.

Hope that's of some help to you!

Just to add that it might be worth checking Airbnb.com for cheap self catering!

No problem, was unsure myself at the start of the year, but gave it a go and think I'll be sticking with hostels for the foreseeable future! Oh and don't forget earplugs if you are staying in a shared room, they're a life saver when people start snoring! :p
