Need to rant and need advice..

When I was in school my teacher reccomended that I do LCA instead of the traditional leaving cert (this was 3 years ago) and it is making life so difficult for me.

The garda and several other organisations have stopped accepting LCA, I can't get access to a proper college and am severely stressed and pissed off.

I was working for a few years but because of the recession I was laid off. Now i'm 22 and have been told by my FETAC tutor that I will be unable to complete the last module because of time contraints (was badly sick for 2 weeks) so now I can't even progress in college this year either.

to top it all off I won't qualify for a grant if I do another level 5 fetac because I have done this one already... Might sound selfish and childish but i really do think the world is against me right now..

    The world isn't against you.

Speak with your tutor and find out what is available to you? Can you transfer to next year? Can you appeal?

I remember a friend of mine doing a course in Maynooth college which was a prep course for non traditional students who wanted to go to college. Give them a call.

Contact NALA - the national adult literary association to get help with literacy if you need it.

Look at why you were advised to do the LCA and see what you can do to change. You're more educated now than you were then.

Deal with the immediate problem, which is the one module the tutor is saying you cant complete. Ask for a meeting with her, there should be processes and procedures to get extensions in extenuating circumstances.

Is there anywhere nearby where you can go back and do the Leaving Cert as a mature student? This would give you more options. I know somebody who did this - it takes a year and they had no problems getting it after initially doing the LCA in school. It definitely opens more doors for you.

Can you go back and do the LC now?

I know seceral people who went back to do there LC - some in their 50s and 60s and went on to university.

Also once you turn 23 you qualify as a mature student and the acceptance policies are different. Maybe look into that.

There are options you just need to find then.

I'm already the oldest in this fetac course by miles. I certaintly don't wanna have to do the leaving cert again at my age...

I just see friends graduating from college and they've been working years and i'v f.all.. I'm hoping things will work out for me in this course but it's looking doubtful..

Everything in this country is backwards.. I mean what's the difference as a mature student from 22 to 23? so another year and hopefully i'll get a college course.........

You're very negative, if you don't mind me saying. Your situation is unfortunate, but tbh no one has it easy in life no matter what it looks like from the outside.

You said you have a couple of years work under your belt, that's a positive. That's also something your friends in college don't have.

I agree with MouseTail in relation to the module in your Fetac course, fight for that year's work rather than letting it slip. Two weeks out sick isn't a huge amount of time really.

If re-sitting your LC takes one year, well that's nothing. You'll be 23 then applying for college and that's perfectly fine. I know plenty of people who started college at 22/ 23/ 24 etc. Plus there will be people who dropped out of other courses and re-applied who'll be 20 or 21. Not everyone is 18 and fresh out of school. The best thing is you have life experience and that will be an advantage when you're in college.

Have you asked for an extension on your deadline for extenuating circumstances?
