Commercial tax on transit for work

    Hi
I'm employed directly by a company, but have to use my own vehicle for work,
I would be buying a ford transit for this purpose and the vehicle would be registered in my name.

Will I be able to commercially tax the van? And what if any hoops will I have to jump through at the motor tax office?

You would merely have to sign a declaration that you would only use it for work (commercially). Not a problem really.

Thanks for that, heard a lot of horror stories :)

So it's the RF111a form with the Garda stamp I need ?

Guess so. Horrors stories about needing a VAT number? No, it's easier if you have one but you are still entitled to tax a commercial if it is for a commercial purpose.

I had the same issue a while ago, motor tax office was happy once I brought in a letter from my employer stating that I need van for work reasons.

This declaration just seems to be invented by motor tax cowboys.
There doesn't seem to be any law, putting a requirement for goods vehicle to be used only for commercial purposes.
If goods vehicle is taxed commercially, then it's main use should be for business purposes. But no law says it must be the only purpose.
Therefore motor tax office asking to sign declaration that vehicle will be used only for business purposes, has no law grounds.

Curious here? Who pays the motor insurance. Is it in your name or your Employers? Who owns the goods you are carrying? You ? Your Employer? Any issues with Insurance Company?

I will be paying commercial insurance on a commercial vehicle, in my name as the vehicle is registered to me.

    Mainly carrying my tools

    Insurance company fine

A letter from your employer saying you need it for work.

Insurance Companies are fine until there is a problem. If you are carrying goods belonging to your Employer, the premium may alter?

No harm to be on the safe side!
