WiFi speed problems

    Hi

    I've just been told by my ISP that my laptop is incapable of receiving the 200mbps download speed that I'm paying for. When I asked how I could remedy this (without buying a new laptop of course!) I was told to buy something called a "Network Internet Controller". Now I'm not very techy so I've no idea what this is!!

    Can anyone give me some advice please?

    Basically, over wifi your laptop isn't going to pull anywhere near 200Mbps.

    Your Wi-fi card is probably N-rated if new enough so 'top' speeds of ~150Mbps.
    Bear in mind that's under lab conditions with zero interference.
    In reality you'll be doing very well to get even half that.

    When they say purchase a Network Interface Controller, they mean use a cable to connect directly to your router and bypass wireless altogether - Your laptop probably already has one.
    This way, as long as your laptop has a Gigabit interface, you'll be able to receive most of your 200Mbps.

    In short, over wi-fi, expect 50Mbps max - and that's being generous.

    It depends on how old your laptop is, if its not too old you NIC should be 1Gbps and wifi capable of 300Mbps. If you upgrade your router to AC and your wifi card in the laptop, you can get much fast speeds. I'm currently getting 866Mbps over the wifi, with a linksys ea6700 and intel ac 7260.
