Thanks for the replies. I went with Aviva in the end. They offered the best out of 4 or 5 companies.

Try changing your occupation and doubling the valve of your car. I saved myself €300 with Liberty by doing that!

For instance if you are an engineer you could change to technician or mechanic or even office worker depending on your situation. Just look through the list of jobs and see what might suit.

The value of my car was €7000, I upped it to €15000 and it made my insurance cheaper. They are only going to pay you the market value of your car anyway so it doesn't matter what you think its worth.

I changed my occupation to a priest driving a 1965 Ford Anglia on Craggy Island, got fully comp for €150.

The funny thing is, mechanics pay more for their insurance based off their occupation than most (so do people work list insurance as their occupation!). Unemployed people pay more too depending on how you list it (if you put your typical occupation in, then 'currently out of work' as your employment status you won't be charged more. Admin staff, Office worker, housewife/husband, etc are the cheapest.

You are right in the value also, some companies up to a limit reduce the premium the higher the value... AND used to a year back, might still.

Raising your excess is also an option if you are comfortable doing so, personally wouldn't recommend going above €500 though.

Also have your car registration date as AFTER the date the insurance starts. For example if your renewal is April 8th, put the reg date as April 9 or later. The reason is when your car gets beyond X years old (it varies for each underwriter, but 10, 12 and 15 years old are typically benchmarks) the car becomes more expensive to ensure. There's a good reason for this, that parts become harder to find if they need to be replaced (one of the main reasons Japanese imports cost more to insure, and why getting a 1993 banger to save money isn't a good idea... plenty won't quote past 15-18 years). But if your car is 9yrs, 363 days old at the start date of the policy... all that matters is that it's less than 10.

Try AXA...they worked out much cheaper for me, full comprehensive
    plus added wife.

I went with Liberty, They were quoting me a grand less than my previous insurer with my GF added on. And shes only learning to drive.

Shop around, thats why I had to do.

Car involved a tip a couple of months ago, not my fault, but the driver of the other car is contesting it, so off to court we go. In the meantime, my policy is up .....and the new premium is just silly money!! (I get the difference back if court case goes in my favour, but that could take yonks) Any suggestions for a company that may be cheaper........

With an open claim? Youre going to find it hard to find anyone who will take you on at all, let alone for decent money.

Ring some brokers would be my advice.

I could be mistaken but if there is an open claim on your policy then no other insurance company will touch you with a barge pole until it is settled.

Yeah, I thought as much. They would make you puke, years of just handing over a cheque each year, no claims, all lovely, than one little mishap, and they are all you like a rash......even with that stepback/bonus protection crap.

I am off the rant n rave thread:D

    Thanks

Kennco are probably one of your best bets, eisenberg1 ... sometimes if it is a small claim they will take it on even if open. Underwritten by RSA.

Every year they send me the same guff about the AA price guarantee (a promise to beat your renewal quote). Every year I ring them, and every year they never ring back. Avoid them like the plague. I'm with 25plus.ie (the actual insurers are AIG), they're the cheapest I could find, and I had no hassle with them when I wrote off a previous vehicle in a single car accident (avoiding a bloody dog).
