Lean to car port covering

    Hi,

I'm considering installing a lean to carport type shelter/covering at the rear of my terraced house and paving/decking underneath it.
It'll run the full width of the house (5 m) extending to between 2 or 3 m, enclosed at the sides by the boundary walls .

The area is South/West facing so it gets lots of sun but also bears the full brunt of any South Westerly winds.

Just wondering if anybody has any experience with these guys? http://www.carportsdirect.ie/photo-album/

I really like the design but I'm interested to know from anybody with a similar covering, how practical they are in terms of sitting out enjoying the sun, with the benefit of being sheltered should the rain start (which is often the case!).

Is it very noisy when it rains on the roof?
Does it cut down significantly on the sunlight entering the back of the house?
Is it secure enough in high winds?
If I were to extend the roof 2 m from the house, will this be enough to ensure that things stay dry underneath? (I realize this is a fairly weather dependent variable)

I'd be very interested in replies on this one also.

Just found this thread from doing a search, I am also planning on putting up one of these at the back of my house and would be interested in anyone else's experiences of doing one. Cheers! Domcq, did you go for the car port in the end?

Archiphel - I've done nothing with the space since. I'm leaning more towards just paving the whole thing and not bothering to cover it.

The extra height from the deck would have me looking into the neighbors gardens and it looks like it will be cheaper to pave.

Quick update on my long running car port type cover project - It's finally finished.

I ended up decking the back (5x4m) in the end myslef with 6x2" boards and 4x4" bearers. The timbre used was treated construction timbre with no grooves. It's been down since May and has weathered nicely after a coat of Ronseal clear treatment.
My only regret with the deck is that I didn't run the boards parallel with the boundary wall rather than the house - I like how it looks parallel with the house but in very heavy rain the rain tends to wick across the boards under the cover. I also sloped the deck away from the house.

I added a lean to cover (4 x 3 m) to it in July. I didn't want to cover it all, partly down to cost and partly because I still wanted an unobstructed sky view out my double doors. The cover has been great and has allowed us to spend much more time outside while staying dry.

The installers (snip) prefabricated it with 6 week lead time and installed it in a few hours.

First of all domcq you are a generally awesome human being for actually taking the time to reply to this thread :):):)

The cover & decking looks great. I will check out that company, I see they are based in Belfast but I presume they do work down south as well? Can you give me a rough idea how much that canopy cost and it is very close to what I am looking for. You're a star!

    Thanks folks :o

Yes, they do work regularly in the South and -snip- was very easy to deal with. I'll PM you the cost. They had a selection of roofing options and we went with the tinted one because we thought that any moss, dirt etc that regularly falls from teh roof would be less visible and that's turned out to be the case.

The tinted one also acts as a sort of UV filter as even on the brightest days you can sit under without a need for a parasol or sunblock. The tinted does cut down on the light to our kitchen a little but it's worth the trade off.

If possible, domcq, could you share that info with me too by PM?
I am also looking to do something like this outside our back door.

    Thanks.

me too as well please domcq.. I'm thinking of getting something like this for the side of the house i.e along the alleyway and make it into a shed for the bikes

As a matter of interest, why did you choose this company over others?

I went with them mainly based on the variety of jobs they've posted on their Facebook page with lots of work completed in the South. I liked the fact that they have lots of previous jobs that you can browse through.

They were also very responsive via e-mail which is how I like to correspond.
