BMW e60 N47 engine - timing chain issue

Apologies for starting a new thread - I know this has been discussed here before.

On Sunday I was getting into my car at the shops when a guy stopped me to ask me if I have had any issues with my 09 520D. I asked him did he mean the timing chain issue. He said yes, that his 08 3-series had snapped the chain while on a motorway in Belfast and now he has the big bill to get it sorted.

He said that he was particularly unlucky as he had planned to bring his car in for a check to see if there were issues with this. He said that he could pay €120 to have the covers removed to see if everything looked okay with the chain. As far as I could tell he was talking about Maxwell Motors in Blackrock.

Anyone know what this check is and if it is worth doing?
My car has approx. 90k miles on it.

Any other preventative maintenance that can be done to help avoid the timing chain issue?

    Thanks

Had the timing chains changed on a 520d at approx 200k kms. Were making a racket for a while before though. Mechanic said it was a minor miracle they survived that long!
